강렬한 오방색으로 표현되는 행복한 자연으로의 여행

복잡하고 각박한 세상에서 우린 늘 자연으로의 여행을 꿈꿔온다. 그래서 주말이면 가족들과 함께 자연이 느껴지는 산이나 바다 등으로 힐링 여행을 하며 피곤하고 지친 일상에서 벗어나고자 한다. 이런 현상은 마치 인간이 자연에서 나고 자란 것처럼 그 속의 삶을 갈구하기 때문일 것이다. 이렇듯 자연과 동화되는 방법은 다양하다. 어떤 이들은 직접적으로 여행을 떠나기도 하고 어떤 이들은 문화나 사물 등을 즐기며 각자만의 방법으로 자연과의 소통을 꿈꾼다. 월간 파워코리아는 이번 6월호에서 우리에게 가장 친숙한 오방색을 바탕으로 강렬하면서 행복한, 그리고 싱그러움이 묻어나는 이종국 화가의 작품을 만나보았다.

롯데호텔에서 다시 시작된 예술적 재능

이종국 작가는 자연을 가장 아름다운 색감으로 표현하고 있는 작가 중 한명이다. 국민학교에서부터 재능을 인정받아 중학교, 고등학교를 거치며 자신만의 예술세계를 만들어갔다. 하지만 어려웠던 가정형편으로 인해 미술대학이 아닌 다른 학과를 진학하면서 잠시나마 미술에 대한 열정을 숨겨야만 했다. 그렇게 대학을 졸업 후 롯데호텔 공채 신입사원으로 들어갔던 이 작가는 처음 베이커리를 담당하는 부서로 발령받았지만 우연히 알게 된 얼음조각과 호텔 예술을 담당하는 부서에 이끌렸고 그는 예술적 재능을 인정받아 부서이동을 하며 다시 본격적으로 예술가의 길을 걷게 되었다. 당시 그의 예술적 감각은 아시아인들의 축제인 일본 아트아이스대회와 유럽 오스트리아에서 열린 세계적 대회인 월드아트아이스에서 다수의 상을 수상하며 그 수준을 인정받아 새로운 예술분야에서 다양한 활동을 펼쳐오게 됐다. 당시 늘 자신의 작품 세계를 갈망하며 스스로의 작품세계에 항상 부족함을 느꼈던 이 작가는 홍익대 대학원에 진학해 2년간 자신과의 싸움에 시간을 갖았고 그 결과 지금의 작품세계를 완성할 수 있는 근간을 마련하기도 했다.     

그런 활동들과 함께 롯데호텔에서의 33년의 세월은 그를 더욱 단단한 예술인으로 만들었고 작년 롯데호텔 디자인실 art실장을 마지막으로 퇴임하며 본격적인 화가로서의 인생 2모작을 펼치며 창작활동에 매진하고 있다.  

두터운 마티에르 속에 탄생되는 자연의 또 다른 표현   

가평군 설악면 작업실에서 펼쳐지는 이종국 화가의 작품은 행복한 자연을 담고 있다. 두터운 마티에르 속에 펼쳐지는 자연의 싱그러움 속에서 표현되는 꽃과 동물들은 특정한 이름의 것들이 아닌 작가의 내면에서 그려지는 이미지이다. 동물들이 서로 마주보는 장면에서는 인간들의 행복한 사랑의 감정을 느낄 수 있었고 꽃들의 화려한 조화는 여느 장소에서 볼 수 없는 특별한 화면이었다. 이유는 즉, 들판에 놓여있는 다양한 들꽃을 한 화면에 담아냈기 때문이다. 이런 조화는 잘못 표현된다면 어지럽고 어색할 수 있지만 적절한 표현력과 순수한 색감의 조화가 완벽한 하모니를 이루어 보는 이들의 마음을 따뜻이 감싸고 있었다. 이 밖에도 꽃과 나무로 이뤄진 시골 풍경은 우리들의 추억을 되새기게 하는 시간을 주었고 그 추억에 빠져 일상에서의 일을 잠시나마 접어두게 하는 원동력이 되기도 했다. “제 작품은 붓을 사용하기보다 직접적으로 물감을 부어가면서 표현합니다. 붓을 쓰면 더욱 예쁘고 아름답게 표현하고 싶기 때문이죠. 잘 그리는 것보다 느낌을 살리는 작업을 하는 편이죠. 그래야 더욱 자연다운 자연을 만들 수 있다고 생각해요. 그게 제가 표현하는 자연의 방식인 것이죠.” 이처럼 이 작가의 작품은 독특한 기법과 표현력으로 우리 삶의 기분 좋고 행복한 감정을 불어넣고 있었다.            

언제나 가장 강렬한 오방색을 바탕으로 자연의 밝고 건강한 모습을 담아내고 싶다는 이종국 작가. 그가 표현하는 싱그러운 자연에서 우리 삶의 가치를 느껴보는 것은 어떨까?하는 생각을 해본다.

Artsy talent restarted at Lotte Hotel 

Artist Lee, Jong-Guk is one of artists who are showing the nature in a beautiful color composition. His talent for painting was recognized since the elementary school and he made up his own art world through the middle and high schools. However, due to his difficult family situation, he had to study for something else and naturally hid his passion for the art for a while. 

After the graduation, he was hired by Lottel Hotel Co. Ltd, and was appointed out to be at the bakery department in the beginning but, he found out the ice sculpture by chance at that time. After all, he got an opportunity to work for that department to take a charge of the icing job and since then, he has been working for the art and became fame as an artist to the fullest. Then, he got a lot of prizes from ‘Japan Art Ice Contest’ and ‘World Art Ice Contest ’, which was a world famous competition in Austria, Europe and his gift was acknowledged. So, he has been working on various activities. At that time, he always desired for his own art world and felt some lack from his works. Eventually, he went to a graduate school of Hong-Ik University and studied for 2 years. For that time, he had time for fighting with himself and at last, he made a foundation to be able to work like today. With that kind of activity, his 33-year-work at Lottel Hotel made him more solid artist. Last year, he was retired from a design department of Lottel Hotel as an art manager and now, he is opening his second life as a professional artist and working on that completely. 

Another expression of nature born in a thick m?tier 

Art works created by artist Lee, Jong-Guk who is working at his studio in Seollak-myeon, Gapyeong-gun have its happiness of nature. Flowers and animals shown in a thick m?tier are images from the artist’s inside not naming specifically. From the scene of that animals are facing for each other, I could feel people’s happy love emotion and the harmony of gorgeous blend of flowers was a special scene that we cannot see in everywhere. 

The reason is why he put various wild flowers in the field at one scene. This kind of harmony could be very complicated and awkward if it shows in a wrong place, but his work looks a perfect harmony with an appropriate expression and pure color tones. 

Other than that, the landscape of a country filled with flowers and trees could give us time to look back in the memory and it became a driving force for us to forget some works in real shortly and temporarily. “I express my works not using brushes but using pouring colors directly. If I use a brush, I would like to describe objects more beautiful and this is why. I tend to work for the feeling rather than painting well. I think I can create nature more naturally only if I have to do that. That is the way I express this nature.” Like that, artist Lee’s works are making our lives feel good and happy with his unique way to show and expression in method. 

Artist Lee, Jong-Gook is who would like to put the nature to be bright and healthy appearance based with the strongest five colors. From his fresh nature in his own way, I think like that, “what if we feel the value of life from them?”
