Seizing a trace, collecting and shaving off

Artist Kwon, Bok-Hee

From a long time ago, engraving in the modern art history has had its unique expression zone all the time. It has a beauty of handmade, which is different from other art reproduction such as photography or digital works. Engravings used to bring out a lot of debates related to reproduction and popularity, so the social interface as much is larger than other genres. The reproduction characteristic of engravings is also one of important feature to enable to combine with new media easily. This point is a factor to make the engraving look better in a pluralistic digital time and it is an attribute to confirm another future possibility as well.

Attraction of engraving is sitting on honesty

Artist Kwon, Bok-Hee has seen a misunderstanding about copperplate print plebeianly and talked about that. ¡°Many people say that is simply duplication but, it is a feature of engravings, which can vary by a variety of interpretation. It is very delicately different by what color will be used and the depth of corrosion. During the process of making layers of corrosion, the results are different in depth of light and shade by the number of how many times to do that.¡± She added, ¡°Engraving is honest. It cannot lie. Unlike a nonrepresentational oil painting, engraving has to be done after finishing all the process in mind first. After drawing, the artist has to cut off with needles and let it corrosive repeatedly for the light and shade effect. It has to be done over and over to complete the work. So, the result is included in the process. This is why engraving is honest. I started doing this since I was so fascinated by that, actually.¡±

Reform from being mature to being ripen

¡°People find more aesthetic things rather than conceptual things. When most of people see ¡®trace series¡¯ or ¡®Rose Madder¡¯ for the first time, they said they felt the life dynamics is full in blooms. To let them feel with no need to explain about that is a way to express the truth of beauty.¡±

As for ¡®trace series¡¯ by artist Kwon, Bok-Hee, it is an artwork to make us feel a deep vitality that is moving in life. Plants inside circles and triangles are implying its solid willingness that is not being given up in the storm. From her works, it is expressed that we know the person¡¯s fidelity and value after going though the difficulties.

Besides, her work, ¡®Rose Madder¡¯ symbolizes the passion, warmth and being full in blooms of females. As if women would be faithful mothers by being patient and understanding, the flowers¡¯ bloom is like a mother¡¯s bosom. This ¡®Rose Madder¡¯ is a work of stepping for a new life and it gives the viewers something more than ¡®warmth¡¯. For the question of her plan in the future, she talked about her hope. ¡°I will work on making ¡®trace¡¯ series just like I have been doing that. Likewise, I would like to be an artist who is cutting off works constantly and can make people who visit my exhibition for the first time stay for a while and make them visit again.¡± From that saying, I could imagine the moment of that people can feel the warmth by her works.
