Another world expressed on canvas by artist Kwon, Hee-Yeon

Professor and artist Kwon, Hee-Yeon of Sookmyeong Women¡¯s University

As for artists who are painting, they are always ready to surprise people with creative thoughts every moment and new methods. Some artists do express their expression for gorgeous objects and other artists are putting nature¡¯s magnificence and mysteriousness into their tools. Like this, it is also their lifestyle to enjoy the pain of creation all the time. However, it seems that showing artists¡¯ inner-side of their own is perhaps a kind of description in unconsciousness that they don¡¯t mean. Works of professor Kwon, Hee-Yeon of Sookmyeong Women¡¯s University are adding more mystiques since they describe things inside of it. Her artworks are rather discovering nature more than realistic expression, so they are just a peace in itself because of there is the inner-beauty.

New look of nature looking from down

Appearance of nature created by professor and artist Kwon, Hee-Yeon is something that we never saw before as it was. It feels like that nature looks to be expressed coming out of artist¡¯s heart or a question of ¡°What kind of mind when the creator who made nature made the nature?¡± It was possible since she started from lower place with emptying her mind, so, we feel the inner-side of expression, which is rising up from the lowest place.

Artist Kwon who is making her works with a subject, ¡®Life of low place¡¯, and her expression is coming up to the meadow from her recent works with by passing through most people¡¯s life bases where is usually hard and harsh and thick woods of nature. Her meadow is capturing people by from brilliant colors to natural colors and even by various methods. The more we are looking at her nature, the more we feel natural and there is more mysterious when we can look back. It is available because she is looking at the world from low; therefore, people who are appreciating her works could put themselves shortly instead of having lives for real, so it is more fantastic as they can look back slowly. It might be the real natural figure that is comfortable and fundamental by feeling of provision of nature out of the law of the jungle in the world. And, it was able to feel the complicity of our lives from lots of shapes of grass, which is flowing naturally and to be healed by combining with nature together. Like this, her works seem to have messages to show the possibility that we see more things if we lower ourselves, since they are researching the problem of circulation and showing the vigor.

Besides, works of professor and artist Kwon, Hee-Yeon are describing nature like the ocean and adding something to it with a humble expression. Of course, the main role is the ocean but, she is telling a new main role, which is a fisherman, by expressing the human kind to be centered inside. So, there is an image of light wave and landscape with that idea.

Other than that, professor Kwon was suggested by a clan gathering of the Daes and the Taes who are descendents from Dae, Jo-Young, so she painted the portrait of him of national standard. From that, she has been paid a lot of attention as she took a big part of preserving our history.

Professor and artist Kwon, Hee-Yeon who is sublimating into a new image of nature after having nothing was working on being a shelter of life where we can feel comfortable of something, warmth, and peace.  -Editor Oh, Sang-Heon

Kwon Heeyeon's recent works are crowded with nameless plants. The grasses have forms but the land in which they take root is unsure and they do not float up into the sky or the air. The features of the grasses are just plants in appearance but are not plants particularly. They are 'signs' similar to plants and grasses as signs.

As a sign, a grass becomes wider from the pointy and to the center of the body then becomes slack. The brush strokes are slender and straight and usually bright or dark white, red, and yellow strokes on the five colors of background. There are speedy strokes which stand out or comfortable and wide strokes. A view from above is applied to the front paintings and same level sight or a view from below are used for the rear paintings. Also two part paintings which divided into the sky and the earth or the section paintings that used grids are unique. There are milk and crimson colored paintings.

-Art critic Kim Bokyoung, Ph. D.
