지난달 국가기술표준원은 프탈레이트계 가소제나 중금속 등 유해물질을 과다 함유한 유아용품과 장난감 12제품에 대해 리콜 명령을 내렸다고 밝혔다. 기준치보다 최대 136배 초과 검출된 유해물질은 미량으로도 내분비계의 교란을 초래한다고 알려져 있다. 그래서 최근에는 내 아이가 쓰는 장난감을 직접 손으로 만들어 주겠다고 나선 엄마들이 늘고 있다. 인형을 만드는 작업은 한 아이를 세상으로 탄생시키는 일과 같다고 말하는 뜨개인형닷컴(www.knitdoll.co.kr)의 송현주 대표를 만나 아기자기한 인형의 세계로 빠져본다.

세상에 하나뿐인 뜨개인형 ‘니트돌’, 양말인형 ‘싹스도르프’

정성을 들여 일일이 손으로 완성해내는 일들을 사랑한다고 말하는 송현주 대표는 뜨개인형과 양말인형으로 주민자치센터, 학교, 문화센터 등에서 강의를 이어오다 10년전에 공방을 오픈하였으며 현재는 낮에는 공방으로 저녁에는 평생교육원으로 운영하고 있다. 2010년에 뜨개인형닷컴을 오픈하였고, 현재 (사)한국공예사랑협회 손뜨개인형·양말인형 분과장으로 활약하고 있다. “제가 어렸을 때 엄마가 만드신 뜨개 옷을 입혀 주시곤 하셨는데 그때는 그 옷을 입는 게 정말 싫었어요. 그러다가 손으로 하는 일들이 좋아져서 퀼트 강사로 활동하던중 우연히 외국잡지에서 본 뜨개인형에 반했어요. 그래서 나만의 뜨개인형인 니트돌을 창작하게 되었어요.” 

니트돌은 기존의 뜨개인형과는 다르게 한 작품에  코바늘과 대바늘 기법을 모두 이용해 다양한 기법을 섞어 완성하는 인형으로 작은 소품부터 큰 인형까지 활용도가 무한하며 특히 감촉이 매우 부드러워 아이들의 정서 발달에도 도움을 준다. 또한 양말인형은 기성 양말을 활용해 기초적인 기법과정을 배우면 누구나 쉽게 인형을 완성해 낼 수 있는 장점이 있다. “저의 창작물은 아이들이 가지고 노는 인형인 만큼 국산 솜과 양말 등 믿을 수 있는 재료만을 고집하고 있고, 아토피개선효과와 민감성 피부 질환 개선, 면역력 향상에 좋은 편백을 활용하여 인형코처럼 포인트인 곳에는 편백칩을, 몸에는 솜과 편백를 섞은 것을 보충재로 사용합니다. 더 친환경적인 제품으로 아이들에게 유익한 제품만을 만들겠습니다.” 뜨개인형과 양말인형의 모든 제품은 송 대표가 직접 만든 도안에 꼼꼼한 설명서가 동봉되어 패키지 형태로 전국한국공예사랑협회 소속 공방과 양말인형 가맹점으로 납품하고 있으며, 뜨개인형닷컴(www.knitdoll.co.kr)를 통해서도 누구나 쉽게 구매할 수 있다. 

응용에서 창작까지 가르쳐주는 공방 

송 대표의 수업은 항상 소수정예로 이루어진다. 물론 전국적으로 많은 강사와 많은 공방이 존재하지만 뜨개인형과 양말인형만의 차별화는 단순히 기술을 가르치는 것에 그치지 않고 배운 기술을 응용하여 창작하는 단계까지 교육하고 있다는 점이다. 창업이 쉬운 만큼 스스로 창작할 수 있는 인재로 키워줘야 무한 경쟁에서 살아남을 수 있다. “창작자들이 대우 받는 사회가 됐으면 좋겠어요. 창작을 해내기까지의 모든 노고와 양질의 재료는 고려하지 않고 단순가격비교만 하는 사람들을 보면 안타깝죠. 무엇보다 힘들게 만든 창작품을 단순 카피하는 문화가 사라졌으면 좋겠습니다.” 

뜨개인형닷컴은 향후 조합형식으로 수작업이 가능한 국가에서 완성품을 만들 예정이며, 현재 어린이집 교구로 들어갈 수 있는 루트를 파악 중에 있다. “주부들이 집에만 있지 않았으면 좋겠어요. 저도 취미로 시작한 일로 여기까지 올 줄 몰랐듯이 기회가 있을 때 무엇이든 시도하고 배워두시길 바래요.” 지금은 중소기업청에 1인 창조기업으로 등록되어 있지만 멀지 않은 미래에 중견기업으로 성장시킬 것이라는 당찬 포부를 밝힌 송현주 대표. 전 세계 많은 아이들이 엄마의 정성으로 만든 뜨개인형인 니트돌과 양말인형인 싹스도르프를 안고 좋은 꿈을 꾸는 그날이 하루 빨리 앞당겨지기를 바래본다. 

Give to your child a present of sincerity made stitch by stitch

According to the report last month, Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) issued a recall on 12 items of baby products and toys that contain excess harmful substances including phthalate plasticizer, heavy metal, etc. These harmful substances detected to be up to 136 times higher than the permissible level are known to cause disturbance to the endocine system even with the slightest amount. So recently, more and more mothers are going into making their child’s toys on their own. We met Song Hyun-joo, president of Knitdoll.com (www.knitdoll.co.kr), to hear about a happy world of dolls. She says that the job of making a doll is like bringing a baby into the world. 

‘Knitdoll’ and ‘Socksdorf,’ the only one of its kind in the world 

Song Hyun-joo, who loves the job of completing things elaborately by hand, had been carrying on with lectures on a knitted doll and sock doll at resident’s autonomy center, school, culture center, etc. until 10 years ago she opened a vacant room, which she is running as a vacant room in the day and continuing education center in the evening. In 2010 she opened knitdoll.com and is currently acting in Korea Industrial Arts Association as head of hand-knitted doll and sock doll section. “When I was a child, my mother put me in the knitted clothes of her own making but then I really hated wearing it. Then, things made by hand grew on me and while working as a quilt instructor, I felt for the knitted dolls I accidentally saw from a foreign magazine. That’s why I came to create my own knitted dolls.

Unlike the existing knitted dolls, ‘Knitdoll’ is a doll perfected using both techniques of hooked needle and bamboo needle, in combination with diversity of other techniques, It is infinite in usability from a small prop to a large doll, while its very soft touch uniquely helps children develop their emotions. Besides, sock dolls have strength in that anyone can use the existing socks to make a doll easily by learning the basic course of technique. “Considering that it is a doll for a child to play with, my created work adheres to reliable materials such as domestic cotton, socks, etc. Using white cedar good for improving atopy, sensitive skin disease and immunity, we use white cedar chip for the point like a doll’s nose and the mixture of cotton and white cedar for the body as supplementary material. Vacant room that teaches everything from application to creation 

President Song’s class is always made up of a small number of elites. Though there are lots of instructors and vacant rooms in the nation, her differentiation as knitted and sock dolls alone means not just teaching technique but training for the level of creation, too, by applying the acquired technique. Since a startup has become easy, it means that only by training into an able man who are able to create on his own can a trainee survive in an infinite competition these days. “I wish the society should treat a creator well enough. I am sorry to see people who simply compare between prices without considering all pains and quality materials until creative work is made. Among others, I hope that such culture of copycatting the creative works made laboriously will soon disappear.”  

Knitdoll.com is going to make finished goods in a country capable of manual labor in the form of cooperative in the future, while looking for a route to include it in the teaching tools of day care centers. “I hope housewives won’t just stay indoors keeping house. I didn’t expect that the thing I took up as a hobby would make what it is. They are advised to make an attempt to learn anything when opportunity does come.” President Song declared her ambition to build it up into an established enterprise in not-so-distant future through it is now simply listed on Small Business Administration as a one-man creative enterprise. It is highly expected that the day will come soon when many children in the world are having a nice dream holding knitdoll and socksdorf, her uniquely made knitted and sock dolls, in their arms.
