Tribute of praise to filtered beauty by Hanji

Here is an artist who is interpreting a classical material, which is Hanji, into a modern way to create own unique frame of the artist. She is repeating endlessly to pull Hanji that she carefully put and added for several times with a great effort in order to make tons of grid patterns. She called it ¡®Opening¡¯ in another word. This ¡®Opening¡¯ is overall spread out on a canvas, but on and off, another image of ¡®Opening¡¯ is made up as extension by destroying grids at some points. By the time she completes one piece of work, it needs months with a very complicated process. Then, what is the world she is trying to open? Even today, artist Kim, Jeong-Ah is working on various ways about method of expression using Hanji and Power Korea met her to get to know better about the beauty of ¡®Reflection¡¯ that can be delivered by Hanji and decided to look into it slowly.

Imparting artist¡¯s value throughout the grids that is called ¡®opening¡¯

Artist Kim, Jeong-Ah used to show her talent for painting in her elementary school years. Thanks to her teacher who recognized her gift earlier, she could get into the art and swept all painting competitions and brought lots of awards. Afterwards, naturally, she went to an art school and thought that she had to do that because of those things.

¡°After entering a college of fine arts, I started having some questions of fundamental things. What is painting and what is an artist and even why I am doing this were them. It was the moment that I felt that I needed to study more deeply for the rest of my life to be a proud artist.¡±

Later, she put a chance to go to France for studying that was recommended by a dean of department of an art school behind, and she prepared for graduated school in Korea instead of it. So, she could work on that as an artist early. Like that, she had a promising future to be a famous artist but, all of sudden; she got married and became a mother of child. Then, she found out that she couldn¡¯t keep working on that any more since she had to take care of her family and it was for real. Like that, she left the field. However, she tried to go to a graduate school again when her children grew up somewhat. From six years ago, she has been studying for being a doctor in Baekseok University and now, she is working on her own works very energetically rather than any other times. Artist Kim, Jeong-Ah used to express things that are flat and abstractive. She used Hanji at that time but wasn¡¯t bother by any materials like colors, crayons, pastel or pencil for focusing on her work styles. But, nowadays, she seems to get more into works using more Hanji than those days back then.

¡°When I was a little, there was a door papered with Hanji in a rural house where I stayed a little while. When I looked at the door with sitting on an Ondol room, there was sunlight through the Hanji door and it was really soft in feeling since the sunlight was filtered by Hanji once not setting as a direct sunlight. Hanji that I felt at that time was an image that has warmth and softness.¡± Artist Kim is planning to leave only grids and expanding her expression for Hanji more.

A world that seems deeper as we look inside

Of course, it is easy to carry the message of the work and to make it look better, if things are colored in vivid colors or shown as themselves. Yet, artist Kim adheres to grids using Hanji because she wants to put some images of filtering in her works. Therefore, there is an attraction in her works, which is making people to look at her works for long. Also, there are some glittering colors on to that, so it is impossible to hide the true beauty in every angle, even though some kind of block due to adding colors on the surface. Eventually, we can discover something sophisticated and elegant from her works. Besides, this glittering is working very successfully to understand classical and traditional stuff, which is Hanji, in a way of modern. ¡°I often feel like this world is covered by a thin cloth, so I have tried to express that by using many times of overlapped Hanji and to show my value in grids as a mean. We are living in this time that is requiring for swift direct insight but I would like to leave some space to be able to be interpreted in my works. From now on, I am going to plan to make a space for thinking for the audience and work on that can make people feel warm emotions with that.¡±

Artist Kim, Jeong-Ah will have a single exhibition at the gallery, ¡®La Mer¡¯ in Insa-dong for a week from June 11th. After that, there are a group project with her university friends and an exhibition of ¡®Art-piece Christianity Association¡¯. Artist Kim, Jeong-Ah is someone who is hoping modern people could get refreshed themselves by appreciating some arts sometimes, although they are living busily. She promised to keep on working on her works in silence as an artist who can be responsible.
