Object of ¡®Self-differentation¡¯ playing with a chair differently

- Western painting artist, Oh, Young-Sook

Minimalism is a refined art that got rid of things unnecessary with the object leaving its own essence. From Oh, Young-Sook¡¯s canvas as a Christianity Art who is forming ¡®self-differentation¡¯, we see the minimalism as a seeking for things refined and simple without decorative ornaments and a transcendental meaning of self-defferentation at the same time. What the ¡®self-differentation¡¯ is all the action that each person¡¯s intelligent system and emotional system of the ego are dealing with by applying for the surroundings in a situation. Artist Oh, Young-Sook has been healing a damaged ego and showing some new methods for the self-maturing as images with a religious attitude with a true virtue, which is suggested by Jonathan Edwards.

Simply refined chair, having an attribute of ego

Thinking of the meaning of the furniture, separately, the chairs have various properties. It symbolized as a mean for looking for human kind¡¯s rest but it was also a tool of showing the rank of a person who ruled the country in the ancient Egypt, which created the chair. Therefore, the chair means a power from a work, ¡®Portrait of Pope Innocent X¡¯ by Vel?zquez and a relaxation of tension expressed by Gogh, Gauguin and Chagall as well. Instability and tension that have many sides in the modern times are also images of more darkness like Samaras Lucas¡¯ anvil chair and Andy Warhol¡¯s electric chair. Artist Oh answered about the reason why she took the chair as her representing object. ¡°I thought the immersion of the post modernism of an emotional system, which is after the modernism centering in the intelligence would reach the self-destruction along with a self-damage, and wanted to express the proper balance as images.¡± According to her, she took the chair that looks square and simple since every chair symbolizes the basic shape. Originally, artist Oh used to create an actual description on her works, but she tried to something new as a differentiated work with unique object during the procedure and now, she landed in working on the semi-abstract work with studying for dividing composition and sides. So, to her, the chair, which has various properties, was the best mean of expressing the minimalism that made the essence of the object to be left only and the balance of the self-deferentation that is a state of reform psychologically. Besides, artist Oh who desires for the religion from the life as the puritanical philosophy that is insisting the minimum property and the religious art is going back to the transcendence, which is beyond the existing thoughts of frame and self-deferentation. Artist Oh is explaining about her work style like this. ¡°Formal characteristics and colors are completed by a property of finding out the essence of the object out of each simple beauty and colors that let realize the spiritual world that we don¡¯t see in our daily life.¡± After all, with a painting as a mean, she is taking a true sound of the virtue has only positive sides that the self-deferentation in the modern times and assembling and then, she is showing about being able to increase the self-deferentation. In another way, it is like that the religious true virtue shown by Jonathan Edwards, minimalism and color expressions are combined as one on her canvas.

Self-deferentation coming out after absorption the sound of the virtue

It is said that the process of minimalism looking simple is very serious and difficult. Artist Oh, Young-Sook who is acryl colors tends to be more caring about the finishing part if she is working on a big result, because brush touching and harmony of colors are quite important in expressing the refined ego. When she is expressing a sole or groups of chairs that are called ¡®self-portrait¡¯, artist Oh is thinking of self-deferentation, which is a core of her work importantly. Simple wood chair as a chair modified is a refined state that has got nothing. Every object with a creator, artist Oh can listen to the words, which are the sound of the true virtue for that reason, her all series is called as ¡®There is sound¡¯. ¡°Perfect truth is in the Bible and it affects things without a life, I believe. At this kind of work, which is like a fighting with myself, and I hope all the process from the start and the end would be felt like a holy pray.¡± Maybe, is that why? There is no decoration for the chair or other ornaments whatsoever in her works. ¡°From now on, I might express shapes of the chair in different ways. However, the base of color will be forever, even though the generation will be changed and there would be new objects by the development of science. This is just like the bible is doing one thing to be modified. I would like give some impression via colors that people can get absorbed.¡± In addition, the self-deferentation is popping up when she even teaches students, not only when she is painting. The children sometimes recognize the image of chair as a leaning wood that they could get into the unknown world, which is they cannot reach with their hands. As for that communication, I used to get involved into their free thoughts. From the all steps in a row, I feel subsequently this art is a way of going forward the completion in my fighting with myself is a blessing, realization and repentance.¡± Artist Oh is studying for the texture of colors at this moment. She is finding out the attraction of Hanji and the oriental beauty with acryl colors so, her next work would be making the Korean aura with studying for the oriental paintings attach to the colors of acryl to modify to create something new. Currently, artist Oh, Young-Sook is taking a few positions like a head officer of western painting at Gangdong Art Association and a vice-president of PISHON members and teaching students at the Christianity Art School, Munwha Missionary School, Myeongsung Church. At the same time, she is working on her own things and doing for other official schedule too. To her, there are things like the exhibition of Gangdong Art Association in June, her private exhibition at INSIGHT Center on 9th July, the exhibition of PISHION in August and other seminars as major plans that are waiting for her.
