‘스페이스윙’으로 의료선진국의 장비들을 압도하다
한독메디칼은 현재 천정가동통합공급장치의 기계사업, 그리고 폐기능검사, 인공호흡기, 마취기 등 호흡기에 사용하는 세균/바이러스 필터 관련 소모품 사업을 하고 있다. 모두 이 대표가 직접 연구 개발하여 탄생된 제품으로서, 수입에 의존하는 기존 제품의 기능과 특징을 분석한 후, 개발제품의 성능목표를 더 높이 설정하여 제작한다. 이 대표는 1983년 한독메디칼(주) 기술부에 입사하여 31년 간 과학기자재와 실험기기와 밀접한 연관이 있는 의료기기 설계를 해 왔다. 80년대 후반 정부의 대기업 의료부서 설립 정책으로 많은 중소/중견기업의 인재들이 대기업에 스카웃되었는데, 이 대표는 많은 제안을 사양하고 한 우물만 판 덕분에 당시 사장님의 제의를 받아 1997년 한독메디칼 부산지사를 본사로부터 분리하여 창업하게 된다. 그해 말 IMF라는 위기를 맞이했지만, 한편으로는 환율로 인해 해외 의료기기 수입이 줄어들고 중고 의료기기 틈새시장이 활성화되어, 연구와 투자를 할 여력이 생겼다고 한다. 이 시기에는 신제품 개발에 필요한 금형과 각종 부품들을 구입하는데 많은 투자를 했다.
대한의공협회의 임원으로서 관련 업무를 보고, 관련 대학 학과에서 후학들을 위해 강의하기도 하는 이 대표의 관심사는 다양한 분야 개발 중에서도 2005년 경 접한 천정가동통합공급장치(Ceiling Pendant System)였다. 25년 전부터 잘 알고 있었지만 당시에는 고가여서 국내 시장이 형성되지 않았었다. 그럼에도 많은 연구와 개발에 착수, 2008년 순수 국내 기술로 이루어진 시제품인 ‘스페이스윙’을 ‘KIMES’에 출품하게 된다. 다수의 발명특허를 보유한 한독메디칼의 천정가동공급장치는 높낮이 전동작동, 냄새배출장치, 초음파충격방지장치, 이중구조베어링 등 선진국 제품에서도 찾기 힘든 성능을 보유하고 있다. 독일 등 선진국에서 수입된 기계들도 수년 후 소음과 고장이 발생하는 것을 감안하면, 기능과 성능, 가격과 컨설팅의 경쟁력을 모두 지닌 ‘스페이스윙’의 장래는 밝다. 이 대표는 “8년 전 독일에 역수출하여 유럽, 중동 등지로 재판매한 기기들은 지금까지 잘 구동되고 있으며, 세계 20여 개국에서의 좋은 평판으로 동남아 시장에서 선주문이 들어오고 있다.”고 한다.

천정가동통합공급장치는 수술실, 회복실, 중환자실, 응급실, 외상센터, 분만실 등 병원의 다양한 부서에 적용 가능하다. “사용 부서와 목적에 따라서 설치 위치와 높이, 구조, 기능 등이 적절하게 되어야 효과를 볼 수 있다. 우리는 필요에 따라서 공간이동이 용이하도록 제작한다. 비전문가의 잘못된 자문으로 위치선장과 기능이 효율적이지 못하고, 공간 배치와 활동에 방해가 된다면 예산만 낭비하는 격이다. 그래서 이 대표는 한독메디칼을 적용부서와 용도를 이해하고, 그에 맞는 위치선정과 기능을 독자설계하고 컨설팅이 가능한 국내 유일한 기업으로 만들었다. “단일 업종 31년을 걸었으며 경영자 이전에 연구자이다. 새로운 아이디어를 받아들이고 실용 가능성을 연구 개발한다. 회사 경영 외 시간이 나는 대로 신제품 연구개발을 한다. 인공호흡기 호흡회로, 인공호흡기 데스트, 다기능 침대, 다채널 뇌혈류측정장치, 원격시력측정기 등 많은 제품들을 만들었으며, 모두 기업의 경험으로써 축적되었다. 이후 박테리아 필터를 국산화하여, 병원에서 사용하는 여러 분야의 세균정화 필터를 생산하고 있다.” 이 대표가 개발한 필터의 세균정화성능은 국내와 미국 공인 기관의 검증을 받아 현재 선진국의 최고 수준 제품과 비교하여 월등히 뛰어난 성능임을 입증 받았으며, 사스가 창궐할 때는 전년대비 몇 배의 판매고를 올렸다고 한다. 개발자로서 이 대표는 “업계에서 가장 어려운 점은 선입견의 벽을 깨는 것이다. 우리는 이미 높은 성능을 인정받았고 해외에서는 당사 제품의 성능과 품질에 큰 신뢰를 보낸다.”며, 한국 시장에서는 선진국과 의료 법령과 분류. 기술, 품질의 기준은 유사하지만, 세부사항의 미흡함으로 개발 초기에서 소송 등 많은 문제를 일으키고 있음을 아울러 지적한다. “모든 문제를 해결하고 시장에 출시되어도 5년 이상 지나야 기존 시장에 받아들이는 배타성이 있다. 그래서 의료기기의 국산화에서는 국가가 장기적인 관심을 갖는 것이 중요하다. 관계 기관을 통한 다양한 미래 선도기술을 투자, 발굴이 미래 한국의 국가 재산이 될 것이라고 확신한다.” 이 대표는 더 큰 시장 확대를 위해 동남아, 중동 등 해외 의료기전시회 출품을 준비한다. 또한 이미 개발한 제품들의 성능과 품질을 개선하는 일에 몰두함과 동시에, 기존에는 없었던 새로운 의료 및 응용관련분야 기기들을 개발 및 완료한 상태다.
