긍정적인 ‘사용자 경험’은 기업들의 입장에서 소비자가 제품이나 서비스를 좋은 기억으로 남게 하면서 구매의사결정에서 매우 유리한 위치한 선점할 수 있게 한다. 기업들은 이러한 고객의 ‘사용자 경험’이 좋은 ‘경험’으로 남을 수 있도록 다양한 기법을 연구하고 있다. 스티브잡스의 세심한 제품포장을 그 대표적인 예로 들 수 있다. 애플은 소비자가 아이폰이나 아이패드를 구입하고 포장지를 개봉할 때 만족스런 ‘사용자 경험’을 제공하기 위해 포장지의 두께를 비롯해 디자인에 많은 투자를 아끼지 않았다. 그 결과 고객들은 제품에 대한 좋은 경험을 간직하면서 제품에 대한 충성도가 높아졌다는 얘기는 유명한 일화가 됐다. 이제 국내포장산업의 규모는 연간 38조원에 이르며 포장은 단순히 포장을 넘어서 제품의 가치를 더 돋보이게 하는 역할을 하고 있다. 이런 흐름에 맞춰 월간 파워코리아는 수많은 ‘국내최초’의 업적을 쌓으면서 30년간 국내포장산업계를 이끌고 있는 (주)모성의 서성운 대표를 만나서 그의 이야기를 들어보았다.
알만한 사람들은 다 아는 포장업계의 진정한 장인
경기도 광주시에 있는 (주)모성은 겉으로는 허름해 보이지만 안으로 들어가니 온갖 다양한 기계들로 가득 차 있었고 기술자들은 손에 기름을 묻힌 채 제품개발에 열을 올리고 있었다. 포장산업계의 진정한 강소기업을 만나는 순간이었다. 서성운 대표는 포장업계에서 ‘알 만한 사람들은 다 아는’ 진정한 장인이다. 그는 우리가 익히 접하고 있는 ‘원 플러스 원’ 포장지제작기계와 1회용 커피 절취가공기, 부직포 쇼핑백 가공기 등을 비롯해 화과방 영양갱, 순두부, 물티슈 백, 샌드위치 포장기등을 직접개발했다. 서 대표는 “이 일을 하면서 휴일은 반납한지 오래고 7년전 암수술을 받은 뒤 몸무게가 45kg 가까이 떨어지면서도 침상에서 제품디자인을 했다” 면서 “참 많이도 개발했다”고 너털웃음을 지으며 회고했다.
(주)모성은 이러한 집념과 열정을 바탕으로 ‘서보 모타 콘트롤’이 장착된 ‘헤드 포리백 가공기’를 국내 처음으로 개발했다. 포리백 가공기는 2~3공정을 1공정으로 줄여 작업속도를 300%이상 향상시키는 획기적인 성과를 거뒀다. 서 대표는 “일일이 손으로 작업하던 반자동작업을 전자동화 시키면 생산능률과 시간당 생산성이 월등히 상승되는 것은 당연한 결과다”고 말했다. 또한 그는 우리가 자주 편의점에서 구입하는 삼각김밥, 샌드위치 포장지를 개발하기도 했다. 그가 개발하기 전에는 모두 외국에서 수입해 들여왔지만 이러한 국산화를 통한 외화대체효과와 자동화 생산공정을 통해서 수많은 비용을 대폭 절감시켰다. 그러나 그가 개발한 기계를 운영해 보면 분명 이익이 나지만 지금 당장의 기계값이 아깝다고 해서 제품의 구입을 망설이는 경향이 있다. 애써 연구에 매진하며 신제품을 개발해 놓으면 곧바로 복제품이 나오고 그러한 문화를 당연시 하게 여긴다”며 안타까움을 내비쳤다.
누군가는 반드시 해야 하는 연구와 개발
서성운 대표는 “1988년 서울기계를 인수하여 기계 제작에 본격적으로 참여하게 되면서부터 영업을 해 본적이 없다. 왜냐하면 기계는 직접 눈으로 보고 사용해 보아야하기 때문이다. 오직 만드는 기계에 최선을 다 한다. 그 결과 지금은 감당하기 힘들 정도로 의뢰가 들어오고 있으며 탄탄하고 독보적인 기술력으로 업계를 주도하고 있다”고 말했다. 서 대표는 이에 그치지 않고 오직 기술력만으로 승부를 걸면서 발명특허를 지속적으로 출원하고 있다. 매해 2건의 신제품을 발표하는 등 기술개발에 회사의 전력을 집중하고 있으며 탄탄하고 독보적인 기술력으로 앞서나가는 모성은 국내를 넘어서 세계화 시장에도 도전하고 있다. ‘국내최초’ ‘국내최고’라는 성과를 바탕으로 미국,동남아시아로 사업을 확대하고 있다. 즉 한국제조업의 글로벌화의 견인차역할을 하고 있는 것.
대한민국 경제부흥의 원천은 제조업
갓 사회에 진출하는 청년들이 대기업과 쉽고 편한 업종만을 선호하다 보니 중소 제조업 기피현상은 포장업계만의 문제가 아니다. 서 대표는 “지금껏 한국경제를 부흥시킨 원동력은 제조업에 있었다. 오히려 좋은 기술은 개발보다 전수가 힘들다. 일본의 대물림 문화가 부럽기도 하다”며 “학교에서의 공부도 중요하지만 가장 중요한 것은 사회에 진출해서도 스스로 생활하면서 ‘끝까지 공부’에 매진하는 정신이다. 멈춰있으면 낙오된다”고 강조했다. 앞으로의 경영철학에 대해 묻자 서 대표는 “최고는 다 갖춰지지 않는곳에서 나온다. 도전정신이 필요한 시기다. 신제품을 출하하면 3년 뒤면 카피가 나온다. 그렇기에 3년 뒤에도 계속 업그레이드해서 앞서나가야 한다”며 또한 “포장산업은 무너질 수가 없다. 계속되어 새로운 상품이 개발되고 그 것을 포장해야 하기 때문이다. 그리고 이제는 포장을 뜯는것도 하나의 ‘사용자경험’이 되었다. 언제나 재품개발에 힘쓰면서 고객들에게 만족스런 ‘사용자경험’을 전하도록 힘써나갈 것이다”고 포부를 전했다. 특히 서성운 대표는 “정부의 중소기업에 대한 다양한 지원이 없는 게 아쉽다. 그리고 인력수급이 원활하도록 제도적 장치도 마련해야 한다. 유능한 젊은 인력들이 기술력을 갖추고 세계를 무대로 활약해야 대한민국의 또 다른 도약기가 오지 않을까”라고 덧붙였다.

또한 헤드 포리백 기계의 발명 특허 출원, 2001년 10월 발명특허를 획득하였고, 그 외에도 2건의 특허, 2건의 실용신안 출원등 기술개발에 박차를 가하여 기저귀 포장지 가공기, PVC 씨밍기, 롤티슈 백 가공기, 화과방 영양갱 포장지 가공기 그리고, 전자부분에서는 2라인 서보 드라이브 콘트롤등을 개발하였고, 2003년에는 국내 처음으로 샌드위치 포장기를 개발 ,특허를 획득 하였다.
‘True master’ leading the packaging industry for 30 years
Strive to concentrate on developing the technique with thinking of the customers all the time
Positive experience for users makes companies preoccupy the market to good advantage with inspiring consumers by their products or service. So, most companies are thinking and studying for various approaches to make ‘the experience’ for the customers to be the good experience. For the most popular example, there is ‘Apple’. Steve Jobs always focused on the design and package. ‘Apple’ didn’t save the money for the design including how thick the packaging paper for the customers’ satisfaction when they opened the box of i-phone or i-pad. It was for the user’s experience in a good way. As a result, customers could have a great experience for the item and their loyalty for the company became high and this is a famous episode, actually. Nowadays, the scale of Korean packaging industry reaches at 38 trillion won annually and this job is not just for looking better but also makes the product valuable as well. For that trend, monthly Power Korea met CEO Seo, Sung-woon who has been leading Korean packaging industry for 30 years so far of Mother Star Co. Ltd, to listen to his story.
True master of Korean packaging industry who is recognized by people in that field
The company, ‘Mother Star’ located in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do looked humble outside but there was full of so many various machines and technicians were working so hard with their hands oiled. It was the moment I saw the real hidden champion of the packaging industry. CEO Seo, Sung-woon is a true master who everybody in the field knows him. He invented so many things such as package machine, ‘One plus One’, we already know, finishing and cutting machine of instant coffee, finishing machine for felt shopping back including packaging machine for sweet dessert called ‘Hwagwabang’ soft tofu, wet tissue bag, and sandwich on his own. CEO Seo remembered all the things with smiling. “Since I started this job, I never went away from my job without any holiday in my life. When I was weighing about 45kg in the hospital after the surgery for the cancer, I was always thinking of product designing in bed.”
‘Mother Star’ invented a ‘head polyvinybag finishing machine’ attached with ‘turbo motor control’ with his passion and tenacity for the first time in Korea. This polyvinybag finishing machine increased the work speed up to 300% and showed a splendid result. CEO Seo said, “It was just obvious to get the consequence if it is changed from semi-automatic system to automatic system because people worked by hands in every step.” Also, he is the person who made the package for the triangle kimbab and sandwich at the convenient store we often buy. Before he made it out to the market, the businessmen had to import the substance but his invention saved the money for that a lot. But, he showed his painfulness, “Even though it is so clear to make some profit with a long term view but they hesitate to buy the machine because of the price and it happens many times. Also, if I make a new machine after a long time of testing and developing, then, sooner or later, there are many similar machines at the market. Normally, people think that is natural in industry.”
R&D that someone must do
CEO Seo, Sung-woon said, “I never did the sales since I started making the machine by taking over Seoul Machine in 1988, in earnest, because I had to look at the machine with my eyes all the time. I only concentrate on one and the next after that. As a result, now we have so many orders that we hardly keep up and could lead the field with our exclusive technique.”
CEO Seo keeps applying for the patent constantly. Every year, he is showing his two new products and focusing on developing technique to the fullest. So, the company, ‘Mother Star’ based with solid and exclusive techniques, is trying to challenge the business to the world beyond Korea. With some results of ‘first time in Korea’ and ‘best in Korea’, they are expanding to the states and Southeast Asia. In other words, they are doing the motive power of Korean manufacturing industry to be globalized.
Korea’s source of economic revival is a manufacturing business
Usually, young people prefer working for big companies to get an easy and comfortable job after the graduation, so they don’t go for the manufacturing industry and it happens in the packaging industry as well. CEO Seo emphasized, “Until now, the major power to develop Korea was originated from the manufacturing industry. Rather, good technique is harder to takeover rather than to develop. Honestly, I am jealous of Japanese family passing down culture. It is important to study in school but the most important thing is a spirit to keep studying all the time even at work with a daily life. If you stop, you will lose.”
When I asked about his future business philosophy, CEO Seo told his plan. “The best comes out of imperfect place. It is time that we need challenging heart. If we make a new product, its copied item comes out in three years later. Therefore, we have to lead it by keeping upgraded in three years. Also, the packaging industry cannot be failed. Constantly, new products are out and they need to pack anyhow. And, tearing down the package became one of user’s experiences. We will do the best to develop the products all the time and try to deliver that satisfying user’s experience with all my hearts.”
CEO Seo, Sung-woon especially added, “I feel sorry not to be able to get various supports from the government. And they have to have some legal equipment so as to make the human resources easygoing. Isn’t it coming for Korea’s another take-off stage only when we can have talented and young people and work for the world?”
