Loved By Artists for Centuries

Since its inception in 1913, Korea¡¯s first traditional stationary store, Guhasanbang has dealt with about 2,000 calligraphy-related items, maintaining a 100-year history. Moving into Insa-dong, it has witnessed many sufferings in the Korean modern history such as the Korean War and Communist Military Occupation in January 4. It has been widely known that 4 conditions of evaluating a good brush-Cheom, Je, Won and Gyon, so-called four virtues. Brushes sold at Guhasanbang has a pointed end, orderly bristles. In addition, they are easy to revolve and has no trouble with long-term use. Thus, they are praised to meet all conditions as being an outstanding brush. ¡°It takes 120 touches to produce a brush. Good ingredients and noble spirit of a master makes this distinguished brush.

Segwangbongbukhakpil which is sold over 400,000 Won is the most high quality brush that Guhasanbang has made. Unfortunately, however, the manufacturing technique was almost cut off after Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1952.

Unlike Japan and China, a couple of masters are involved in all procedures here from ingredient collection, production to sales at the shop, which laid the foundation for making quality products. Emperor Gojong and Sunjoun are known to use the products made at the shop. Against this backdrop, there were few among calligraphers or Eastern-style painters who have not used a brush made at this shop. Many famed artists such as Lee Sangbeon, Byun Gwansik, Kim Choonghyun, Kim Eunghyun, Cheon Gyungja, Park Soogeun, Lee Jongsang, Seo Seok and Park Nosoo were all its regular customers.

¡°When Kim Gichang and Kim Eunho were struggling, I gave them brushes and other items free of charge. Now that they became a master in their area, I am very proud.¡± Hong said. As many artists living outside Seoul visit the shop on weekends, it opens even on Sunday.

Low-quality Chinese Ingredient Flood in Insa-dong

In Insa-dong, many traditional stationary and antique shops are being replaced with hawkers due to lack of central or municipal governments¡¯ appropriate culture policy. With cheep and low-quality Chinse calligraphic ingredients occupying the area, customers do not seek relatively expensive Korean products, which led to a vicious cycle of a drastic decrease in masters who has made brush, ink and ink stone. Even under these harsh circumstances, Hong adheres to tradition to provide customers with high quality products. However, he has many difficulties. Due to the lack of procurement of brush ingredients, he chose to import ingredients from China and make products in Korea.

The more serious problem is that schools do not provide a compulsory calligraphy class. ¡°Years ago, there were many middle and high school customers. These days, however, only art college students or painters come here.

Teaching calligraphy is greatly effective at strengthening students¡¯ personality. Today, schools descended to sending students to college. The solution of resolving various social problems caused by adolescents in a digitalized era lies with informing them with right history and noble tradition, and equipping them with benevolence on the basis of teachings of wise men in history. Instead of buying digital game consoles, how about taking your children to Insa-dong and present them a set of calligraphy items on the upcoming Children¡¯s Day?
