텝스홀릭 김학수 원장의 기본 교육철학은 ‘공부는 즐거워야 한다’는 것이다. 공부가 즐거우려면 어떻게 해야 할까? 김 원장은 학생들이 영어공부를 통해 원하는 목표를 성취하는 것도 중요하지만 영어공부 자체가 주는 순수한 배움의 기쁨 을 알아야 한다고 강조한다. 그로써 지속적인 공부, 즐거운 공부, 빠져드는 공부가 실현되면 점수는 자연히 오를 수밖 에 없다는 것이다. 그는 “정답을 맞히는 것이 중요한 게 아 니라 문제를 풀 때 어떤 생각으로 풀어서 답을 냈는지 그 과 정이 중요하다. 대부분의 교육기관이 당장의 성과를 위해 정 답만을 강요하지만 그런 천편일률적인 강의식 수업의 시대 는 끝났다고 본다”고 말했다. 텝스 독해영역은 한 문제의 길 이가 평균적으로 5줄 정도이고, 단어의 수는 100개 내외로 출제된다. 그리고 선택지는 50개 이내의 단어로 구성되어 있다. 총 150여 개의 단어로 한 문제를 구성하게 되는데 수 험자는 이것을 1분 이내에 해석하고 정답을 찾아내야 한다. 다시 말하자면, 1분에 200개의 단어를 해석할 수 있는 속독 능력을 요구하는 것이다. 수능 외국어영역이 이러한 문제를 2분 안에 풀도록 하고 있으니 수능보다도 두 배속의 해결능 력을 요한다. 이에 김 원장은 “텝스는 영어실력만 늘어서 되 는 게 아니고 분석력, 종합사고력이 같이 뒷받침돼야 한다. 공부를 오래했다 해도 성적이 안 나오는 경우도 있다. 그래 서 가르치기 어렵지만 반대로 그런 이유 때문에 전문기관이 필요하다”고 말했다. 

만점자 배출의 비법은 논리적 사고력의 강화

Analyzing and Comprehensive Thinking Skills Should Come Together 

Kim Haksoo, a president of TEPS Holic says his education philosophy is based on making interesting learning. To have an interest in study, what should we do? On the one sense, achieving his or her goals through studying English is meaningful. However, he highlights that students should realize genuine joy of learning. According to him, if they get into the learning, high test scores will consequentially increase. 

“Instead of focusing on getting the right answer, the process of understanding questions and seeking answers is more important. Most of education institutes teach students how to find the correct answer for their immediate performance. The era of such a monotonous lecture-oriented lesson is going to end.” he said. In the reading comprehension section, the length of one passage is composed of 5 lines and 100 words on average. There are about 50 words included in multiple choices. Therefore, test applicants should know the total of 150 words within a minute and find a correct answer. In other words, this requires them to grasp the meaning of 200 words a minute. Compared to Korea’s Scholastic Aptitude Test, aka Suneung, which allocates 2 minutes for the same length of the passage, TEPS calls for problem-solving skills two times faster than that of Korea’s SAT. 

“To get a high score in TEPS, students should strengthen both analyzing and comprehensive thinking skills. Some students fail to earn high scores despite long hours they had invested in studying. In this regard, it is difficult to get them to perform well in the test in a short period. Ironically, a language institute specialized in TEPS is required to help these students.
