A live witness of the art world for 40 years

Cho Seok-hyun, representative of Homi Art Shop

Homi is the right art material for the present and future Korea.

There is nothing but change. Now in 2014, anyone can find the changed street scenes in front of Hongik University¡¯s main gate. Hundreds of studios remodeled from the parking space of detached houses in the 80¡¯s have been supplanted by clubs and coffee shops. This doesn¡¯t mean the fundamental change of the scenes in front of Hongik Univ. Emphasis on art, music and individuality has always underlain this street as its identity. However, we are too young to dare testify this change caused by time and tide. It is up to the adults who have resided in this place for a long period time to record it. There is an art studio existing in front of Hongik Univ. as if to witness the lapse of those years ? Homi Art Shop. We met its representative Cho Seok-hyun who says, ¡°I am trying to give our customers such confidence that they can buy even one painting brush reliably to their purpose.¡±

Continues invariable friendship with artists

Here at Homi Art Shop you can see every kind of art supplies and materials for coloring, print, sculpture, etc. The owner started an art shop in front of Hongik Univ. at the beginning of the 1970¡¯s and has continued to make the history of this street together since, except when he moved to the present location at the end of the 1990¡¯s. Representative Cho Seok-hyun said, ¡°However much the Internet mall has advanced, you must make your choice of art materials by seeing them in person because even the same color makes a subtle difference from company to company,¡± mentioning the need to be prudent at choice of materials. Besides, his making the longtime history has been essentially atributed to the warm connection between representative Cho and those who professionally perform the fine arts. At that time, the owner would find the art supplies hardly available for the poor students in person without minding the long distance. He continued, ¡°Artists are a night owl and they sit up all night for their work. Those much relieved these days, in the past, the authors used to call on me even at two in the morning when they were in a hurry. I remember that having a sudden phone call, I waited for the caller without closing the door. At times, customers visited me from the province,¡± recollecting ¡°Those students have become professors and famous authors. There was nothing but us alone from which they could purchase art materials when inspiration came during the work.¡± Those students who are now professors, painters and artists over the years are still buying art supplies here.

Entering Homi Art Shop for the first time, one who is not related to painting would be confused among numerous art materials here, but actually there is no need to be puzzled. When one looks around the art shop steadily, it is really amusing to meet new products never seen before as if you have visited D. I. Y department store. One reporter who is mad about a writing implement says, ¡°When I have an appointment near Hongik Univ., I never fail to drop at ¡®Homi Art Shop.¡¯ Though there are not many things to buy because I am not a professional artist, I still make a rule to look it around. It sets my mind at peace just to smell the notebook, drawing paper and dyestuffs. So soon before I could realize, I find myself holding a pocketbook in my hand.¡±

Artist gets inspiration from anything and everything in daily life. They beat their brains on how to paint work from morning till night. Representative Cho Seok-hyun said, ¡°Authors who want an unusual job visit and look around our art shop asking, ¡®I am mapping out this so can¡¯t there be some aids suited for it?¡¯ They wouldn¡¯t be able to find another place for such consultation about suitable aids.¡± Actually, there were many people in Homi Art Shop who are looking around without buying a material. Since new art aids are under constant development, authors who have to develop their works are always getting ideas by looking around Homi Art Shop.

Dreaming about an art shop boasting of half a century¡¯s history

Though the trace of a long time has remained in mutual affection like this, Homi Art Shop is now providing diverse services accepting the change of the times. Each product has been made to verify the use, effect, etc. with QR codes while the shop is equipped with every kind of trendy art products for hobby. Since 2011, Homi Art Shop has been holding an exhibition to sponsor rising authors. Like the slogan of Homi Art Shop ¡®Where your imagination starts,¡¯ the shop has a comprehensive list of all materials and supplies that allow the expression of things just remaining in one¡¯s thoughts. Consumers want inexpensive products. Representative Cho referred to his vision, however, ¡°When they are in lower years they like to buy cheap things but these are usually discarded as they come up in the years because it is reflected on their grades. I manage an art shop based on consumers and confidence. Art shops ¡®Shinjuku¡¯ in Japan or Pearl Paint in the US are such place with a long history. I wish Homi Art Shop could be ¡®such place¡¯ in Korea.¡± Though <Homi Art Shop> is now visited by buyers from Hong Kong and Taiwan with recognition as ¡®one of the best in Asia,¡¯ what makes him more glad than this fame is a few words of greeting from old customers when they visit again, according to him. He says, ¡°I am really happy to hear them say, ¡°Sir,, I owed you much in those days.¡± He just gives a loud laugh before this impertinent behavior accompanied by honorable return of those poor Art College students who took away painting implements without being noticed from him the owner. It may be possible for us to have the best art shop of Korea boasting of half a century¡¯s history like ¡®Shinjuku¡¯ or ¡®Pearl Paint.¡¯ As the shop has been sharing the joys and sorrows of our art circles since the 1970¡¯s, it seems quite logical to expect that ¡®Homi Art Shop¡¯ will make a larger painting for the future of us and the shop itself.
