According to the last month's data by the National Statistical Office, the unemployment rates of the youth aged 15-29 were at 9.9%, up 1.3% from the same month last year.  The figures are at the highest point since June, 1999 when the IMF currency crisis was still lingering, which makes the government more and more worried. The irony here is that even prestigious companies are having difficulty finding talent they need. Another problem is that the government is continuing its ineffective regulations on head-hunting enterprises, right at the moment their brisk activities are needed more than ever. The Power Korea met with Kim Seong-jung, representative of the local head-hunter Prohanz Korea Inc., which leads in finding talents and introducing them to companies, a job which neither the government nor universities can do properly.


Prohanz Korea, serving some 700 client companies, was selected by the daily business newspapers, Maekyung and Hankyung, as the best search firm.


Having the job of head hunting as a major business, Prohanz Korea is specialized in career consulting, personnel affairs seminars, and strategy consulting. They consult large-, medium-, and venture-companies as well about their personnel affairs, and conduct career consultation training for job seekers or candidates for career positions. Rep. Kim is a veteran with 14 years' experience of working as a personnel manager at prestigious foreign consulting firms such as Kolon, Philips Korea, etc. He founded Prohanz Korea in Jan. 2003, based on many years of his field experience.  

¡°I realized I have my limits as a salaried worker, when talking with company owners or management specialists. So, I decided to take myself to the next level when as young as possible, rather than live as a part to companies." For one year after the decision, he often regretted of it, or missed the salaries he had received regularly. But Kim had a firm belief that his long careers would not betray him. Pushing himself the harder whenever faced with the tougher difficulties, he used to came back home early in the morning everyday, and work even at weekends. After the desperate time of six months, his efforts started to get rewarded: there were rushes of orders from companies, so he had to employ more workers, now amounting to 30. He also moved his small office in a studio to the southern Seoul. Now, Prohanz Korea comes in 7th or 8th in the industry, having some 700 accounts including domestic and foreign companies. Domestic large-, medium-, and venture  -companies account for 60% of its accounts, and foreign companies the remaining 40%.

¡°Considering the structure of our economy, I thought I can raise Prohanz's brand awareness, and thus survive in the industry, only by achieving economies of scale. Thus, the Prohanz, drawing a long-term blue print, could join hands with the Unies, which was then about to declare a new vision in its 20th anniversary of foundation." Kim remembered. The merge created a synergy effect, leading them both to a rapid growth based on financial stability. What lies behind the success of Prohanz Korea today is its differentiated strategy and specialized competitiveness. Rep. Kim has improved Prohanz's competitiveness in building up a data base about 100,000 customers by forming various human networks. Unlike the existing head hunters which provide only one-on-one consulting services, Kim also made it possible to find, faster and more exactly, the persons which client companies are looking for, by assigning 3- or 4-men teams including the person in charge. 

An annual seminar on personnel affairs is held on a grand scale outside of the company, as part of his differentiation strategy. His client companies express great satisfaction with fresh ideas which are presented in the event attended by many specialists from large or foreign companies. At the company level, on the other hand, they send E-News Letters every two months to provide various relevant information for customers, building up trust among them. Especially, the persons in charge must pay a visit to their client companies every two or three months and try to maintain smooth communication and close relationship with them.

Prohanz Korea is also planning to open, around the end of this May, the site "Job and Career." While the existing head hunting service is a B2B-type business, the newly prepared service is a B2C, designed for individual customers. ¡°So far, we have been happy with the job of introducing talents to companies which need them. In the future, however, we are going to expand the scope of our business into providing more specialized, professional services for our clients." he explained. 

As part of the project, Prohanz will carry career consulting business, including training and advice, for job seekers who are having trouble in writing out their resumes or failing in job interviews. We can interpret this as Prohanz's determination to help college graduates to get a job, a task which even college employment agencies can not perform. For early and regular retirees, Prohanz is going to provide consultation for reemployment. While Prohanz has played a part for establishing creative economy, as indicated above, by seeking the right person in the right place, and finding jobs for the unemployed, and talents for companies, it still expressed its frustration over the low awareness of head hunting by the government. "As head hunting is a high-end business for our future to rely on, continuous support and attention for it is needed at the government level. We also expect the government to treat head hunting as a separate sector and ease regulations on it." he insisted. The Power Korea encourages Rep. Kim, who promises he will lead in nurturing global talent in this age of globalization, to compete squarely with global search firms, utilizing his know-how to occupy the domestic head hunting market.
