Meatbank Inc., specialized in processing seasoned meat, is expected to jump into China from the U.S. as a fusion entrepreneur, the keyword of "creative economy."

Recently, Korea signed an FTA deal with Australia, and now, has free trade agreements with 48 countries in total. The pact with Australia will bring benefits to Korea's main export items, such as cars and machinery, but its agricultural sectors are expected to suffer serious damage. Measures are urgently required to address the difficulties. In order to revive Korea's agriculture and make it a future growth engine, it is vital to develop her primary agricultural industry into a fusion industry, the 6th industry.

The monthly Power Korea covered intensively Meatbank Inc. and its representative Kim Jae-beom that leads Korea's stock farming industry, introducing specialty food corners for seasoned meat into the market first in Korea, for example.

Meatbank Inc. opened the nation's first specialty store

for seasoned meat in  department store.

Meatbank Inc. was first founded in 1994 in the name of "Abba-son", and could secure a food corner for seasoned meat at the Hyundai department store. Received well by consumers at the time, it restarted in 1997 as Meatbank Inc. with 82 chain stores.

Since then, Meatbank Inc. had grown step by step: In 2000, it obtained the ISO/KSA 9002 quality certification first in the industry; in 2001, it won the  international quality approval of SGS and HACPP-applied workplace approval of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry; and in 2006, it was approved by Ministry of Science and Technology as technology research laboratory.

Korean flavor based on technologies learnt from abroad

The Meatbank has a variety of products including seasoned meat, processed sausage, pork cutlet, beef stake, barbecued pork rib, bacon, etc, which is indispensible for it to survive in the market as a middle-sized company. It has used the "Yorirak" brand for 16 years, but it is all the more difficult to promote its own brand to the market as most of the sales are made through Home Plus or Lotte Mart. The meat processor learned meat processing technologies, basically from Europe, but created its own taste by specifying tastes familiar to Koreans. Its motto for meat processing is "Technology from abroad, but taste from our own."

"We need strategy to make Korean native cattle a name brand."

Kim Jae-beom, a director of Meatbank Inc. revealed his opinion about the Korea-Australia FTA as follows: we need strategy to make Korean native cattle a name brand as in the case of "Wagyu", a stock of cow native to Japan. Otherwise, the domestic market would face serious difficulties.

He said that when the FTA with Australia goes into effect, tariffs will be gradually lifted, but the relative prices of Australian beef can not keep going down. It's because the effects of the tariff elimination are highly likely to offset by the increase in offer prices of Australian beef, as the annual consumption of beef is on the increase in China.

Regarding the outbreaks of AI in Korea, director Kim also asserted that it is wiser for the government to buy and freeze AI-infected poultry and use them later for processed meat, rather than stamp out and bury them. "If turned into processed meat, the infected poultry will exercise lesser ill effects on their alternative markets, such as pork or beef markets, which is more suitable to Korea with a small area and high population density." he said.

Meatbank Inc. presented a future of Korea's agriculture

in reexporting processed meat.

The Meatbank's overseas marketing strategy shows a way of developing agriculture, a primary industry, into a sixth one: fusion industry which is the current keyword of the government-initiated creative economy. Recently, Meatbank Inc. established Meatbank USA in the state of Pensylvania, U.S.,  and rented a nearby factory, starting to manufacture meat products there. Now, it plans to advance into L.A. this coming summer. The targets are various, ranging from locals to Koreans. Of the Meatbank's processed meat foods, bulgogi, or barbequed beef, is receiving hot responses from U.S. consumers, which means it suits the tastes of Americans as well. Riding on this popularity, it is going to secure a booth at Korea Night Market in L.A. around May. They expect a degree of success in the project. According to Kim Jae-beom, a director of Meatbank Inc, those activities in the U.S. are all intended for it to expand into the Chinese market. In order to enter the Chinese food market, they must produce goods in China, as it is impossible to export food items to China due to quarantine by the Chinese customs, for example. It is close to an adventure, however, to produce goods in China unless they have enough capital to sustain it, and that is why the Meatbank entered the U.S. market with a long-term plan to reexport U.S.-produced food to China.

It is like leaning foreign technologies first, and then reexporting them with Korean taste added, which seems to present a vision of 'hanryu', or Korean wave, in Korea's agricultural industry.

Sous-Vide Stake will appear on the "Lotte Home Shopping" TV network

on May.

For the domestic market, Meatbank Inc. is now concentrating on developing new products. Having technical cooperation with Kaesler, U.S., the Meatbank applied to its seasoned meat the technology of extending distribution periods, which was originally designed for other kinds of food. The final goal in the cooperation is to extend distribution period without using preservatives: storing seasoned meat for 40 days in cold storage and providing them for domestic convenient stores. Recently, the processed-meat seller has got an golden opportunity to promote its own brands. It co-developed Sous-Vide Stake with famous chef Edward Kwon and launched it in large domestic marts. Now, you can enjoy at home the Meatbank's high-quality processed meat products. Meatbank Inc. has so far devoted time and effort more to the intangible than the tangible: becoming the best, rather than the first, to promote the real Korean flavor to the world, and that is why we remain interested in what next steps it will take.
