국내를 넘어 세계 최고의 안전용품 전문 기업으로 도약

가정 내에서 발생하는 안전사고가 해마다 증가하고 있다. 특히 분별력이 부족한 10세 미만 어린이와 60세 이상 고령자가 안전에 취약한 것으로 나타나 보호자의 각별한 주의가 요구된다. 지난해 한국소비자원이 집계한 조사에 따르면 가정 내 안전사고는 2010년 이후 꾸준히 증가해 왔다. 올해는 지난 8월말까지 2만7727건이 접수돼 전년 대비 21.5%나 증가한 것으로 조사됐다. 전문가들은 적절한 안전용품 사용으로 사고를 미리 예방할 것을 권고해 왔고, 이에 따라 해마다 안전용품 시장의 규모도 꾸준히 성장했다. 국내 안전용품시장을 선도하며 독보적인 위치를 차지하고 있는 생활낙원(www.livingparadise.net)의 김기석 대표를 만나봤다.
유아안전용품 전문 브랜드 <아가드>
김기석 대표는 1993년에 가나디자인이라는 디자인회사로 처음 경영에 뛰어들었다. 하지만 오랜 꿈이었던 제조업 분야에 대한 갈망으로 1998년 직접 제품 개발에 뛰어들면서 생활낙원을 설립하게 이른다. 초기에는 발로 뛰어다니며 자문을 구하고, 다양한 사람들에게 리서치를 하고, 해외 시장을 누비며 다량의 샘플을 분석하고 세상에 없는 아이템 찾기에 골몰했다. “생활안전용품이라는 시장이 국내에서는 제대로 형성되어 있지 않아 좋았고, 무엇보다 누군가를 이롭게 하면서 기업의 내일을 도모할 수 있어 좋았습니다.” 김 대표는 자신이 연구개발한 제품을 ‘자식’이라고 부른다. 자식처럼 아끼고 사랑한다는 뜻이고, 자식처럼 인고의 세월을 통해 낳고 길렀다는 뜻이다. 그렇게 15년 세월이 흐르는 동안 세상의 빛을 본 자식이 어느덧 1000가지가 넘고, 특허/디자인 권리만 700가지가 넘는다. 세계적으로도 단일 카테고리로 가장 많은 종류의 제품을 보유한 수치다. 물론 처음에는 시장 개척에 대한 염려가 컸다. 하지만 좋은 제품이 있었고, 안전용품에 대한 소비자들의 요구가 있었다. 별다른 홍보 전략 없이도 수많은 거래처들이 먼저 찾아와서 거래를 제안했다. 머지않아 대형 슈퍼마켓을 중심으로 내수중심의 유통망을 형성할 수 있었고, 문구시장과 재래시장도 장악할 수 있었다. 우수한 제품력과 다양함으로 내수시장 70% 점유율이라는 엄청난 기록도 달성했다. 특히 신세계, 이마트, 홈플러스 등의 PB 상품 100가지 이상을 유통하는 것은 대형 마트에 입점한 수많은 업체 중에서도 이례적인 물량을 자랑한다. 3년 전 부터는 글로벌 브랜드로의 면모를 갖추기 위해 유아안전용품 전문브랜드 <아가드>로 소비자들을 찾아가고 있다. “아가드란 아이를 지켜주는 안전한 울타리라는 뜻의 순수 국산브랜드입니다. 요즘 생활용품 관련 90%이상의 제품이 중국산이라 불안감이 높은 게 사실입니다. 저희 아가드는 오직 국내에서 저희가 직접 전량 생산하며 꼼꼼하게 품질관리를 하고 있습니다.” 무엇보다 아이들에게 무해한 소재를 엄선하여 사용하고 있고, 혹여 미리 파악하지 못한 문제에 대해서는 즉각 대처가 가능하도록 시스템화하고 있다. 아가드의 제품 중에서 가장 선호도가 높은 효자상품은 단연코 모서리보호대와 손끼임방지 제품이다. 기존에는 어린이집에서 선호가 높았는데 요즘에는 안전에 대한 인식이 높아져 가정에서도 널리 사용하고 있다. 또한 홍콩, 남미, 유럽, 중국 등 세계인들도 함께 이용하고 있다.
2년간의 고집스런 연구 투자의 결과 <이동식 샴푸시스템 sione~>
김 대표는 헬스케어 분야로 사업의 다각화를 시도하고 있다. 100여명의 식솔들을 책임지기에는 아가드의 제품이 부가가치가 높지 않아 항상 고심이 많았기 때문이다. 이번에 생활낙원이 선보인 이동식 샴푸대 <sione~>은 노인과 환자, 장애인들의 위생과 안전을 위해 최초로 탄생한 제품이다. 급.배수 시설을 하지 않고 자유로운 이동으로 언제 어디서나 샴푸 서비스를 할 수 있는 이 제품은 사용자에 따라 편하게 맞춰지는 슬라이딩 시트와 슬라이딩 발 받침대 뿐 아니라 모든 기능이 원터치로 사용할 수 있어 더욱 편리하다. 또한 별도의 샴푸대를 연결하면 침상에서도 샴푸가 가능해 거동이 불편한 노인과 환자들에게는 희소식이 될 것이다. 향후 각종 병원과 요양시설, 관리샵 등에서의 수요가 많을 것으로 기대되며 수출 전망도 매우 밝다. “고령화 사회로의 진입으로 고통 받는 환자와 노약자의 수가 크게 늘고 있습니다. 합리적이고 효율적인 서비스의 요구가 절실한 만큼 환자와 노약자는 물론 간호인과 가족들에게도 유용한 제품이 되기를 소망합니다.”
생활낙원의 전 임직원들은 매월 첫째 주 회사 내의 강당에 모여 함께 예배를 드린다. 근무 시간을 할애해야 하고, 그에 따른 비용도 발생되지만 모든 임직원이 하나 된 마음으로 기도를 드리는 시간이라 김 대표가 가장 행복감을 느끼는 순간이다. 괄목할만한 점은 생활낙원의 직원 100명 중 30명이 장애인이라는 사실이다. 김 대표가 생각하는 성공한 CEO로서의 사회적 책임은 세상을 이롭게 하는 제품으로 장애인들에게도 지속가능한 일자리를 창출하고 안전하게 기업을 이끌어 궁극적으로는 안전한 사회를 만드는 데 일조하는 것이다. “제겐 제 3세계에 학교를 세우고 싶다는 오랜 꿈이 하나 있습니다. 한국전쟁이후 서방의 선교사들이 그러했듯이 언젠가는 저의 꿈 Living Paradise School을 세워 아이들을 교육하고 지원할 것입니다.” 김 대표는 항상 빚진 자의 심정으로 수익의 일부를 따로 모으고 있다고 했다. 한편 생활낙원에게 2014년 상반기는 정비의 기간이 될 것이다. 20년 동안 쌓인 재고를 처분하고 ERP시스템을 구축하고 있다. 또한 매월 국내외 박람회에 진출하여 더 많은 지역의 더 많은 사람들의 안전을 책임져 나간다는 방침이다. 하반기부터는 본격적으로 대리점체제를 구축해 나갈 예정이다. 이제 국내 제1의 안전용품 전문기업에서 세계 제1의 기업으로의 도약을 꿈꾸는 김기석 대표. 그가 꿈꾸는 안전한 파라다이스가 더욱 빨리 우리 눈앞에 펼쳐지기를 기대해 본다.

Safety accidents in the house have been increasing each year. Especially, people from under age 10 and to age 60 who are not that sensible for everything and lack of sensibility are exposed to any danger, therefore, their protectors need more cautious for them. According to the survey by Korea Consumers Center, the safety accidents in the domestic have been rising up constantly since 2010. For this year, until the end of last August, the number of registration reached at 27,727 and it was 21.5% higher compared to last year. Experts have recommended people to use more appropriate safety products, and by that, the market of the safety items has kept being bigger steadily. Power Korea met CEO Kim, Ki-Seuk of Living Paradise Co., Ltd. Another brand, <aguard> which is a professional brand for the babies, was made by CEO Kim, Ki-Seuk and he started doing his own business with ‘GANA Design’ for the first time in 1993. However, he had desired for doing the manufacturing industry and established ‘Living Paradise’ in 1998 when he started into producing the products directly. In the beginning, he met many various people by himself for the marketing and analyzed lots of samples over the world and then, he pondered over finding something new in the world.
“It was good because the industry of the safety products on living didn’t set up properly yet and most likely, I felt good to help people and think of the future of the company at the same time.” CEO Kim calls every item he made as a ‘child’. It means he loves each item like his kid and he spent so much time for making it with patience like having a baby. With that mind, it has been 15 years so far and there are over 1,000 products he created. Licenses and the rights of design are more than 700 and it is the biggest number in the world as the one category. Of course, there was a worry about pioneering the new market in the start but he had good ones and customers needed them as well. After all, without any promotion process, plenty of business marketers suggested him for a deal. Sooner or later, his company could settle down in the domestic line being a center of huge supermarkets and dominate the stationary area and traditional market too. With a great quality of products and variety, his company made a great result that they covered over 70% in the national industry, which is remarkable. In particular, providing over one hundred number of item for SHINSEGYE, E-MART AND HOMEPLUS as a PB is outstanding among other companies. From three years ago, his company is meeting their customers by <aguard>, which is a global professional brand for the babe safety products.
“<aguard> is a pure Korean brand, which means a safe fence to protect the children. It is true to have a high discomfort to see over 90% of products made in China at the market and they are usually about our life style. Our aguard is only made in Korea from the start to the end and we are doing the maintenance very carefully.”
Most of all, his company is very picky of the materials for the babies and if there is something they couldn’t find out in terms of unknown safety, they take the requirement right away. The most favorable items by the customers are, no matter what, the protection of the corner and the prevention for being stuck with a hand. It was very popular in the kindergarten but, nowadays, it is also popular at home as much as people know about the safety issue. Besides, people in Hong-Kong, South America, Europe and China use them alongside.

CEO Kim is trying to make the company have many angles by starting the healthcare business. He always has had a thought of aguard doesn’t make enough money for almost 100 employees’ living life he has, because the added value is not that high. So, this time, a Movable Shampooing system that he kicked off, <sione~> made by Living Paradise Company is the first product for the safety of the disabled, the patients and the old people. Without the in/out water system, anybody can do shampooing for someone anywhere since it moves freely. Not only having sliding seat and foot stand, but also it is handling by the one-touch button. So, it is very convenient in many ways.
Moreover, if a separate shampooing stand is connected, it is possible to do the shampoo in bed. Then, it will be great news for old people and sick people who are not able to move properly. Afterwards, it is going to expect the demand of hospitals, nursing facilities, beauty shops etc and the hope of exporting is quite promising, also.
“The number of painful patients and elder people has been increasing hugely since we are facing an aging society now. As they are desperate for needing some reasonable and efficient service, I hope this device will be useful for the patients who are really in need, the old people including nurses and families.”
On the other hand, all the employees and executives of Living Paradise gather at a hall in the company every first week to pray. They have to make time for that and spend some money every time, but CEO Kim feels the happiest moment during the praying time with one heart. Other amazing thing is that 30 out of 100 employees of the company are the disabled. CEO Kim’s successful CEO who are responsible for the society in his mind is a person who can lead the company for safety and creating more sustainable jobs with products that make the world better and ultimately, it is becoming a part of making the safe society.
“To me, I have had a dream in my mind for a long time to establish a school in the third world. After the Korean War, as many western missionary workers did something for us, I would like to build up my dream, ‘Living Paradise School’, someday and will educate them and support them.”
By the way, CEO Kim said the half of 2014 will be a period of maintaining. And, he will do away with inventory that has been stored for 20 years and is building up for the ERP system. And, from the second half of this year, the company will set up for the agency system seriously as planned. CEO Kim, Ki-Seuk is who is dreaming of jumping from the number one Korean safety products company into the top company in the world. We expect to see the safe paradise that he is longing for in front of us, as soon as possible.
