CEO Lee Jae-hoon of Lad Coffee entered into coffee industry when he graduated from university deciding that coffee was the thing he could enjoy working on for extended time apart from his major. It would take dozens of more efforts and perseverance than other majors and specialists but he thought that coffee was just worth his whole lifetime. So while giving lectures at an institute and a college, he trained himself at a roasting plant and coffee house. Besides, acting as a judge on the certificate of qualifications for barista, he was able to go through a diverse world of coffee. It was then, he said, that he conceived an idea of ¡®Lad Coffee¡¯ after accumulating his own philosophy and knowhow about coffee. CEO Lee explained, ¡°Lad in Lad Coffee is an acronym for ¡®Like a Diamond.¡¯ It is the brand reflecting my determination to give birth to the best coffee through the hand of barista from choosing coffee beans to extracting them by roasting just as the lump of diamond is born again with the value of tens of thousands of times by the hand of lapidary.¡± Lately, the coffee industry is facing the third wave. Domestically, the first wave was the type of franchise that popularized and spread coffee culture. Then, with the advent of caf? in personal-roaster type, the industry became diversified. Now, however, the market has begun to see shops professionally dealing in coffee over a certain volume. Watching the customers¡¯ demands increasing largely not only in Seoul but in the provinces as well, CEO Lee felt a need to have a coffee brand suited for districts. Currently, Lad Coffee is building a thick customer base centering on Daejon. Especially, by using specialty coffee beans including C.O.E (Cup of Excellence) and composing differentiated menus, Lad Coffee is winning a great popularity among younger people. Not only the coffee roasted in person at the shop, he is also selling Dutch coffee and coffee berry that can be enjoyed at home or in the workplace. Besides, the side menu he serves is enough for a full meal because it uses plenty of ingredients. He says that he is making endeavor to develop a unique menu for deserts now. Two kinds of menu are being already loved: Blue Caf? au lait with extraordinary sense of colors and Croque Madam Hash Brown made of fresh ingredients. CEO Lee said, ¡°We are trying to be able to serve the best coffee from the optimum environment. We are going to take the lead in promoting a larger diversity of coffee as well as our own aromas and flavors, not the existing stereotyped coffee.¡± How about trying Lad Coffee? It is highly recommended to those who are looking for the ultimate coffee flavor or who want to see nice people at a good place. Lad Coffee is planning to open another three or four branch shops in the latter half this year in Daejon and Choongchung region. 


Coffee is a culture rather than a table luxury 

On tree-lined streets near Hongik University are lots of cafes thriving with unique atmospheres in diverse concepts. Customers are not visiting and staying there paying higher prices just because of the coffee taste. They are consuming the space suited for their taste besides enjoying the coffee. CEO Lee says that coffee is now an established culture, not just a favorite kind of beverage. He thought hard for a considerable time about finding the color of Lad Coffee¡¯s own not to be found before and embodying it because he knew the shift of the market better than anyone else. That¡¯s why he put his heart and soul into each disposition of music and objects as well as interior design. Above all, CEO Lee made his best efforts to make Lad Coffee a dynamic and lively space. He said, ¡°Usually, while a bartender is considered a dynamic sort of occupation equipped with some showmanship, barista a static engagement. We have produced a more dynamic caf? inside by making the space used for the barista like a stage and tables for customer like a seat.¡± This has enabled Lad Coffee to pursue two-way communication with customers through diverse things to see. The sensuous interior of the Lad Coffee head shop succeeded in attracting many customers¡¯ attention in a short time. Customers filling up the shop say they are visiting here because of both its deep coffee taste and unusual interior. For the future, Lad Coffee is planning to make each of its branches different in atmosphere by entering into the franchise business. CEO Lee said, ¡°Two things are still common. Staff of Lad Coffee is working and they are carrying out the extracting method of Lad Coffee¡¯s own using our own coffee beans. Outside of that, everything will be made in the direction that the shop owner may want in an effort to make branches more individual.¡± 


The franchise business through a thorough training 

Many of the existing coffee houses imprudently engaged in franchise business making inroads into the market. However, a considerable portion of them disappeared from the market because they failed in control and supervision. So Lad Coffee is not aiming to open member shops in many places. Besides, the brand is planning not to let them enter the franchise business until they receive a thorough training from the head office. Referring to this, CEO Lee said, ¡°We made our own concept of ¡®Label.¡¯ Even if we make our branch, we will adhere to the system of sending out to the branch only our staff belonging to the head office after they have completed a thorough training from the head shop.¡± By introducing the concept of ¡®Label Label,¡¯ he has made every preparation to make quality control easy in case of the increased number of branches. It was his arrangement to make sure the customers are able to taste the same coffee anywhere in the country as they have enjoyed at the head shop. To that end, he is going to proceed with the relevant training including consulting by calling the shop owners together periodically. CEO Lee Jae-hoon, who loves the very culture of enjoying coffee, has his biggest aim of making the best environment for a barista to work at. So he welcomes anytime anyone who will go along this path with him for a long time looking far into the future. He clarified his hope and ambition by saying, ¡°Characteristic of coffee, we are very likely to be egocentric. In order not to fall into such self-attachment, we should make active exchange with baristas listening to the voice of customers all the time. Above all, I am going to build up Lad Coffee into a company where baristas can feel happier than any other place possible.¡±

There are many factors in Lad Coffee captivating many people in a short time, such as graceful taste from good-quality coffee, side menu of fresh ingredients, original interior design, hand-picked music, and good-looking barista. But nothing of these is more than the young ambition and sincerity of CEO Lee Jae-hoon who loves coffee more than any others.
