조각은 입체를 수단으로 공간에 표현하는 조형미술이고 3차원의 공간 속에 구체적인 물질로 구현된 입체적이며, 강하고 견고한 양감의 구성체이다. 이렇듯 예술에서 조각품이 갖고 있는 매력은 남다르다. 우리가 상상하는 모습을 담기도하고 현실에서 있을 수 없는 상황들을 직접 연출해 고정관념을 깨버리기도 한다. 말 그대로 존재할 수 없는 창작의 결정체라는 것이다. 특히 양화선 작가의 작품은 그간 보여 지던 조각품들의 인식을 깨고 회화적 현실을 조각으로 나타낸다는 것이 참 이색적이다. 그의 작품에서는 책갈피에서 나무가 탄생되고 가방에서 꽃이 자라기도 한다. 또한 그 속에 물과 동물들이 어우러져 있기도 하다. 마치 거대도시라는 공간에서 자연스럽게 어우러지는 자연을 새로운 관점에서 풀어낸 듯 보였다. 

마음의 치유와 평화로움을 추구하다    

양화선 작가의 작품은 마음의 치유와 평화로움, 그리고 휴식할 수 있는 힐링 그 자체이다. 혼잡한 세상 속에 자연의 가장 근원적 생명인 물과 함께 표현되는 동물들은 아주 순수한 상태이고 나무의 생명력과 표현되는 가방, 우산, 의자 등은 우리가 흔히 볼 수 있는 현대적 사물들이다. 그 사물들 속에 자연의 상징들인 나무와 동물, 그리고 물의 조화는 답답하고 복잡한 세상 속에 자연의 소중함을 일깨워준다. 양 작가가 처음 조각을 접할 당시에는 보여 지는 것들을 그대로 담아내는 조각들뿐이었다. 하지만 어릴 적부터 회화를 전공했기에 회화적 표현 방식을 조각에 대입시켰다. 처음으로 양화선 작가가 시도한 자연의 새로운 표현방법이었다. 입체의 한계를 벗어나 일종의 자연현상들과 형태들을 담아냈고 그 후로 많은 작가들이 기존의 정형화 된 조각의 틀에서 벗어나 현재까지 다양한 시도를 해오고 있다.     

양 작가의 작품을 들여다보면 발전하는 현 시대에 발생되는 자연의 문제점들을 내포하고 있다. 홍수로 범람하는 물 위에 놓여진 쪽배 그 가장자리에 한 마리 새가 위태롭게 걸터앉아 있다. 또한 줄기가 물에 잠긴 나무의 무성한 잎은 모두 지고 앙상한 가지만 드러내고 있기도 하다. 바로 무분별한 발전으로 인해 자연적인 큰 재앙의 모습을 담아낸 듯 보였다. 이 밖에도 자연의 모습이지만 미래의 인간의 모습을 그려내는 느낌 또한 그려졌다. 이처럼 양 작가의 작품은 단순히 표현되는 조각의 모습이 아닌 그 속에 우리 내 감정과 미래의 모습, 그리고 현재의 모습까지 모두 담아있는 세상의 축소판이었다.  

언제나 작품으로 관객들에게 편안함을 보여주고 명상과 휴식을 통해 힐링을 심어주고 싶다는 양화선 조각가. 그의 멋스러운 작품은 복잡한 세상의 소중한 안식처가 되기에 충분해 보였다.                  

양화선의 <山水紀行> 시리즈는 분명 현실의 공간을 탐험하는 것도, 현재 진행형의 상황도, 그렇다고 관조적 세계관의 반영도 아닌 현상화 된 과거의 분절적 경험이다. 경험이란 분명 기억과는 차가 있는 보다 리얼리티에 근접하는 개념이지만 사물을 보기 전에 느끼는 인간은 조합된 경험을 지닐 수밖에 없다. 작품에 나타난 모든 물이 생명의 이미지로서 작용하고 있음은 작가가 지닌 개인적 기질에 의거한 것으로 여겨진다. 그럼에도 나무나 대지와 분리된 물의 존재는 자연의 구성원으로서 제 자리를 단단히 지키는 고집불통의 존재로 보여 지기도 한다.  -조은정 미술평론가- 

여기에 실린 작품들은 내 작업실 주변에서 자라고 있는 나무들에 관한 것이다. 

10년 전 한 그루의 나무도 없던 목장의 황량한 땅에 작고 여린 묘목들은 사다 심었는데 그들은 돌봐주지 않아도 알아서 잘 자라 주었다. 이제 그들은 씩씩하고 건장한 어른들이 되어 바람과 비와 홍수로부터, 어둡고 가공된 혼탁한 도시로부터, 명백한 불안과 외로움으로부터 나를 보호하고 지켜주는 전사들이 되었다.  

그들은 언제나 변함없이 자신들의 자리에 서서 대지와 하늘을 잇는 신령스런 존재로 나의 뜰에 확고하게 서있을 것이다. 

그들이 나에게 준 풍요로운 애정과 생명의 일체감에 관하여 나는 앞으로 하고 싶은 말들이 참 많을 것 같다. -양화선 작업노트 中-

Traveling from nature, dreaming of healing

Sculptor Yang, Hwa-Sun

The formative art as a sculpture is expressing the solid look as a way in a space and the sculpture is a three-dimensional and concrete material and a strong voluminous combination. Like this, an attraction of sculpture in arts is different. it has something that we imagine and sometimes can break the prejudice by directly making circumstances that cannot be happened possibly. 

Literally, it is a crystallization of creation that cannot be existed. Especially, works of Yang, Hwa-Sun are quite special since the picturesque reality is living in the sculpture. From her works, a tree can come from a bookmark and flower is growing up in a bag. Also, water and animals are harmonized in there as well. It seems she is looking with a different view of nature that is living in the huge city. 

Seeking for the cure of mind and a peace 

Artist Yang, Hwa-Sun’s works are a kind of healing that people can take a break and get healed and a peace. Animals described with water that is an essential source in nature are just innocent in this crazy world and bags, umbrellas and chairs are that we can see every day’s modern objects described with trees. In there, the harmony of trees, animals and water, which are a symbol of nature, can make us realize that we feel how much the nature is so precious in this hectic world. When artist Yang started doing the sculptor back in the day, every sculpture was in it what the sculptors looked at for real. However, she used to study for painting, so she could substitute her picturesque knowledge into working on the sculpture. For the first time, artist Yang, Hwa-Sun made a try like that to show a new expression of nature. Afterwards, a lot of artists have been trying to do something else that they had never done as a manual before. 

By looking at her works, they include some problems of nature that are current issues happened in this time. There is a bird sitting dangerously on the edge of the small boat on the water that is flooded. It looked she showed the biggest natural disaster by imprudent development. 

Other than that, there is a work looking like nature but it seems to draw the human. Like this, artist Yang’s works are microcosm of the world that has emotions, future and current phases not only simply sculpture. Sculptor Yang, Hwa-Sun is who wants to show a comfort to the viewers with medication and relax and give a healing, all the time. Her sophisticated works seem enough to be a precious resting place. 

Yang, Hwa-Sun’s series of <Travelling water and mountain> is a segmental experience of the past that is realized. Experience is a totally different concept to close to the reality, but, people cannot help having a combined experience before looking at the object. All the water the artist used in the works is working as an image of water seems happened by her personal character. Despite of that, the water that separated from trees and ground looks like something stubborn and is keeping the position firmly as a member of nature. -Art critic Jo, Eun-Jung 

Works here are about trees that were growing up around my studio. 

10 years ago, there was no tree, so I bought some young baby plants on that wild land and now, they are growing up by themselves. In a word, they became strong grown-ups and dashing and protect me from wind, rain, flood and obvious tense and loneliness as warriors. They will stand up on my ground as always without change where they used to be as a holy tree to connect between the land and the sky. It seems that I will have many words to say from now about lots of affection and sense of unity of life. -From Yang, Hwa-Sun’s work note
