신동권의 태양, 강렬함을 쓰다

Part.1

신동권 화백을 표현할 때 태양을 빼놓을 수 없다. 그가 표현하는 태양이 우리가 느끼는 태양과 그리 달라 보이지 않지만 그 속에는 보는 이가 느낄 수 있는 강렬함이 있다. 

‘日出-信望愛(일출-신망해)’의 제목으로 지금까지 일관된 작품세계를 펼쳐온 그의 작품에는 켜켜이 쌓여 온 강렬함과 웅장함, 그리고 작가의 영혼까지 담겨 있다. 

작가가 생각하는 태양의 의미에 에너지, 시간, 공간, 만물을 포함하기 때문이라고 보인다.

“신동권 화백의 작품 속 태양은 그냥 태양이 아니다. 빨갛고, 노랗고, 파랗고, 그러다 사막에서 만난 목마름과 같은 하양 태양이 되기도 한다. 실제 태양보다 더 태양 같은 모습으로 본질을 탐닉하게 만들고, 숨 막히는 뜨거움으로 한없이 빨려 들어갈 것 같은 우주의 모습을 보여준다”고 컬렉터 전진표 씨는 평했다.

내가 본 신 화백의 태양 역시 그렇다. 그저 태양만을 있는 그대로 표현했다기보다는 그 속에 담긴 의미를 유추해볼 때 비로소 진정한 신 화백의 태양을 볼 수 있다는 생각이다. 

가끔은 우주가 되고, 가끔은 오아시스가 된다. 또 어떤 때는 시간을 담기도 한다. 신 화백이 말하는 믿음, 소망, 사랑이 될 때도 있다. 

작가는 틀을 만들지 않았다. 보는 이가 느끼는 대로, 보는 대로 태양을 생각할 수 있게 도화지를 열어 놨다. 틀 속에 갇히는 순간 그가 평생 그려온 태양은 그저 한 낱 세상을 비추는 도구에 불과하기 때문이다.

작업실을 들어서면 발 디딜 틈 없이 태양이 가득하다. 그림에서 내뿜는 에너지가 작업실을 밝히고 있듯 그의 작품이 즐비한 작업실에 들어서는 순간 태양은 어둠에 휩싸여 있던 가슴을 훤히 비춘다. 하루도 빠짐없이 태양을 그렸고, 작가의 삶은 어떠해야 하는지는 여실히 느낄 수 있다. 그 덕에 신동권의 태양은 더욱 깊이 있는 강렬함을 담고 있다. 생명을 품은 태양을 보는 듯 실제 태양보다 더 태양 같은 신동권만의 태양을 그려냈다.

외국에서도 그의 작품에 대한 관심이 크다. 유럽예술가도서관협회(ECAL)와 미국 뮤지엄 오브 아메리카가 뉴욕 아트 엑스포를 통해 20명의 국제 현대 예술가를 선정했는데, 2005년에는 신동권 화백을 아시아 최초로 선정해 전 세계의 아트페어와 갤러리, 언론사, 딜러, 예술품 수집가, 전문가들에게 홍보책자를 배포해 그를 소개하기도 했다. 

국내에서 그의 입지는 더욱 대단하다. 침체기의 미술시장에서도 그의 작품을 선호하는 컬렉터가 늘고 있으며, 일반인들도 그의 작품을 구매해 집에 걸어놓고 신동권의 태양을 느끼고 있다.

태양을 주제로 다양한 소재를 접목시킨다. 군무, 여인의 누드, 야생의 꽃 등이다. 이는 태양과 접목돼 다양한 의미를 표현한다. 그 의미는 신 화백이 담고 싶은 의미도 있지만 보는 이가 느끼는 또 다른 의미가 될 수도 있다. 극작가인 김수현 작가는 신 화백의 작품을 “원초의 고향의 향수를 느낀다”고 평했고, 미술평론가 박세당 씨는 “생명과 이의 역동적 흐름을 상징”한다고 표현하기도 했다. 

40여년 전, 신 화백이 화단에 등단할 당시 동해 여행 중에 일출을 보고 암흑기였던 화단을 밝게 비추겠다는 의지로 시작한 태양 작업은 그때의 의미로 느껴지기도 하고, 더욱 발전된 의미로 평가되기도 한다.

꾸준히 발전된 태양, 그렇기 때문에 더욱 의미 있는 작품으로 평가되는 신 화백의 작품은 모든 것을 태워버릴 듯한 태양의 강렬함을 표면적으로 보여주며 누군가에겐 희망이 되고, 누군가에겐 새로운 도전을 의미하고 있다. 신 화백에겐 믿음, 소망, 사랑이다.

앞으로도 신 화백이 태양을 버릴 수 없는 이유다. 작품은 꾸준히 태양을 기준으로 하며 변화되고 발전할 것이다. 그가 태양을 그리는 이유가 더욱 명확해 질 때까지 말이다.

The sun that shines in utmost intensity

Part 1

Artist Shin Dong-kwon cannot be referred to without using the word of sun. At a glance his expression of the sun may not look that different from the sun in our views, but his painting of the sun delivers such intensity as to be felt by the viewer. 

Under the title of ‘Sunrise ? faith, hope and love,’ he has shown a consistent artwork so far, which contains intensity, magnificence and even the soul of the author. 

It is probably because the sun in his notion includes the meaning of energy, time, space and all creation. 

Part 2

Art collector Jeon Jin-pyo commented, “The sun expressed by artist Shin Dong-kwon is not just the sun. It becomes red, yellow, blue and a white sun like thirst experienced in the desert. Looking more like the real sun, it makes us inquire into the essence and shows a picture of the universe feeling like we are going to be absorbed endlessly into the breathtaking fervor.” 

The same thing I saw from the sun of artist Shin. It is not a literal representation of the sun. We won’t be able to see the sun portrayed by artist Shin until we infer the meaning it connotes. His sun sometimes becomes the universe and other times an oasis. Besides, it may contain time. It may become faith, hope and love often mentioned by artist Sin. The author has not made a frame but opened his drawing paper to enable the viewers to think of the sun in the way they feel or see it. It is because the moment it is shut up in a frame, the sun he has been drawing for life wouldn’t be anything more than an instrument to flash on the world. 

Part 3

On entering his studio, one can find it filled with numerous suns anywhere and everywhere. As the energy spouted from the drawings lights up his workplace, in his studio stuffed with works, the sun illuminates any visitor’s heart that has been covered with darkness. He has painted the sun without skipping one day and his daily routine tells many people what an author’s life should be like. Owing to this pattern, Shin Dong-kwon’s sun contains even more depth and intensity. What artist Shin Dong-kwon has achieved in his art is a sun more like the real sun as if we were looking at a sun containing life.                    

Part 4 

His works attracts attention from overseas, too. When ECAL (European Council of Artists and Libraries) and US Museum of America selected 20 international modern artists through New York Art Expo, they selected artist Shin Dong-kwon for the first time in Asia and introduced him by publishing and distributed a booklet to art fair, gallery, press, dealer, art collector and specialist in the whole world. 

Domestically, his standing is more solid. Even in a slump of the art market, there are an increasing number of collectors in favor of his works while ordinary people purchase his work in order to hang it in the home and feel Shin Dong-kwon’s sun. 

Part 5

He combines diverse materials under the topic of the sun, such as group dancing, nude woman, wild flowers, etc., which puts diverse meanings into expression by gluing together with the sun. The meaning can be what artist Shin wants to express but also can be intended for the viewer to feel anyway. While playwright Kim Soo-hyun referred to artist Shin’s work by saying, “It makes feel the nostalgia for the primordial home,” Park Se-dang, an art critic, said. “It symbolizes life and its dynamic stream.” This work based on the sun started 40 years ago when artist Shin made a debut in artistic circles and saw the sunrise during his trip to the East Coast with his resolution to flash on the dark and gloomy painting circles brightly. It now feel like the meaning then or is valued with an evolved meaning. 

Part 6

With his constantly advanced sun, artist Shin’s work is considered more significant, which superficially shows the intensity of the sun that seems to burn out everything, meaning hope for someone and a new challenge for another. For artist Shim it means faith, hope and love. 

This is why artist Shin cannot get away from the sun. His work will vary and develop constantly focusing on the sun until it becomes clearer why he paints the sun.
