The Second Act is the Beauty of Emptiness and Sharing

The exhibition 'Act 2 Chapter 1 of Nam Gungwon' has recently ended in great success in Hangaram Museum of Art, the arts center. In this exhibition, a masterpiece of up to 15 meters and more than 200 large and small works were showed spots were displayed, space installation art (the organ of memories, moon jar, three-dimensional sculptures), digital artworks have been exhibited video, and the artist's biography is (1,2 pieces) was also introduced. It was a precious time when we could see the path of artist Nam Gungwon at a look who has been painting pictures on the canvas based on only the scarecrow for 30 years, and all sorts of human emotions internalized as a scarecrow. He, through this exhibition, hosted the event in which he donated his 200 works to raise funds to be used for protecting Dokdo, which was the focus of the public attention. Artist Nam Gungwon threw off heavy clothes called an educator and came back now as a painter with a light heart. We met him and listened to his art philosophy.

A Painter and Educator Nam Gung Won Came Back

As a Full-time Artist Nam Gung Won

\Artist Nam Gung Won was born in 1947 in Baekdunri Gapyeong, Gyeonggi province. The extraordinary passion and talent for painting is just a mere luxury to the artist who had his father die during the Korean War and had a tough childhood. "He started a social life as an elementary school teacher in 1968 on the grounds of  the hardships of life because it was the time when we had to survive in the real world rather than following ideals. But the passion for painting was too enthusiastic to keep it in the dark. My dream was to grow as a painter and wished to enroll Art University, but he couldn't enter it on grounds of family circumstances." He went through Chuncheon Teachers' College Incheon Teachers' College and passed art teacher's qualification, and then transferred to Myongji University, graduated from it, followed by a graduate from Art Education, Yonsei University Graduate School of Education. He worked for elementary, middle and high school for 10 years, and as a professor of   art college for 34 years, finished a total of 44 years of teaching career and retired at the regular retirement age. Even while he has gone his own way of a simple and honest educator, artist Namgung has never neglected his creative work. He has had his workroom in his hometown of Gapyeong, Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do, and has steadily painted the philosophy of his art on a canvas for 30 years. He has communicated with the public through 35 private exhibitions and 350 invitational exhibitions, he introduced the excellence of Korean Art to the world through Germany,  China, and Paris Exhibitions. He did his best and performed his part with great success as a great master in the art circles, serving as positions of a general president in art of Gyeonggido, Republic of Korea Art Exhibition judge, an operation director of Art Exhibition in Gyeongggido. He is publishing <Art Seongnam Culture> recently for the development of local culture and art. When he was a general president in art of Gyeonggido, in 'Nam Song International Art Show,' he played a role of the vanguard leading to the popularization of art, bringing up a conversation topic, 'Honey, let's hang a piece of picture in our house.' He created 'Scarecrow Village' in his hometown Gapyeong in1998, and in a neighborhood of it built 'Nam Song Art Center,' leading regional cultural projects. "In Nam Song Art Center, he has poured his power to broaden the power of art through foreign artists to make room where artists can concentrate only on the work. I plan to discover young artists with strong experimenting spirit in the filed of such as site-specific work, installation art, conceptual art, sound art, performance art, interactive art as well as painting, sculpture." He got credit for his performance and enjoyed the glory of taking prize such as Gapyeong Culture Award, Culture Prize of Seongnam city, Korea Artist Award,

Korea Art Contribution Award,  Korea Art Festival Grand Prize.

The exhibition 'Act 2 Chapter 1 of Nam Gungwon' has recently ended

in great success

Artist Nam Gungwon received orders of Hwangjo presentation medal from President in February 2013 and ended his single path as an honored educator for the past 44 years. Artist Nam Gungwon who did not neglect his role as an artist even when fostering the younger generation as an educator is now at last paced his intact artist by going a long way round. "Even when I was in the teaching profession I had a lot of work, and now I'm now grateful to be absorbed in his work, looking deeper into looking more things. He plans to constantly seek new change in the future, attempting works of art a variety of areas such as painting, sculpture, media art, installation art, etc." Artist Nam Gungwon ended encore exhibition all held in art world gallery following the exhibition 'Act 2 Chapter 1 of Nam Gungwon' held the arts center. The theme of the work was by far the scarecrow. The scarecrow is the faint perfume of old days to him and is the artistic viewpoints which has built his work world. "Heo means emptiness and sharing, Su means protection, Ah means raising, and Bi means building. The philosophy of scarecrow is to empty in brief the good thing in you by sharing, to empty bad things by discarding. In addition, by keeping an important value supporting this community, and finally we should stand as true people." The motif picture of upside down ladder focused a great amount of attention. Not the ladder narrowing by going up, the more expanding ladder the more climbing up, which contains a message of hope towards tomorrow. "It is the picture giving notice the Act 2 Chapter 1 of my life. Until now, the life is getting narrower by going up, and I had a feelings of Crisis, frustration, and horror. From now on, by placing the ladder upside down I will have a comfortable and stable time towards my dream." Artist Nam Gungwon presented being deeply moved and was a good role model for his junior artists by showing, through this exhibition, an earnest insight towards life, feeling ahead of the times, and skillfulness to absorb quickly the latest trends in the art world. In addition, through the appearance leading donations, he demonstrated a positive power of influence, far-reaching power, about sharing the good things in myself like his art philosophy. He says that he focused on building and climbing in Act 1 of life, but will unfold world of the scarecrow philosophy of the emptiness and sharing in his second Act 2 of life. We will cheer on his brilliant artistic life to blossom even more splendidly.
