소명의식과 진정성이 고객과의 접점 만들어
“만 번 이상의 거절을 겪고 나면 일을 즐길 수 있다”

그를 지칭하는 말은 수없이 많다. 대한민국 20대 최초 TOT, 한국 MDRT협회 최연소 지점위원장, ING 최연소 Lions Club 달성… 그 순간순간이 기쁨이고 행복이었다. 하지만 그가 가장 듣기 좋은 말은 진정성으로 고객의 마음을 움직이는 사람이라는 말이다. 그가 만약 가슴이 아닌 머리로 영업을 했다면 거절의 횟수만큼 번민도 많았을 것이다. 하지만 족히 만 번은 넘는 거절 속에서 그가 살린 생명도 많다. 그들을 위한 소명 때문에 ING생명 젊은 전사 최병준 E.Lion은 오늘도 행복한 마음으로 거절을 즐기고 있다.
고객의 거절보다 생명에 대한 가치를 먼저 생각해야 해
생명보험업계에 새로운 역사를 만들어 내는 사람, ING생명 최병준 E.Lion은 2009년 당시 만 25세 최연소 FC로 입사했다. 이후 그는 차곡차곡 보험업계를 뒤흔드는 결과들을 쌓기 시작했다. 특히 ‘유지율 100%’는 그가 가장 자랑스러워하는 점이다. 이것은 단지 영업만을 잘해서 이룰 수 있는 것이 아니라, 상품의 퀄리티와 고객의 만족도, 영업사원의 지속적인 관리가 삼위일체 될 때 가능하다. 단 한 명의 고객에게도 최선의 다하는 그의 마음이 고객에게 전달되었기 때문일 것이라 생각된다.
최병준 E.Lion은 입사초기를 회상하며 “이행돈 SM과의 인연으로 ING생명에 입사했지만 입사 후 6개월 동안 실적이 없었다. 그만큼 고민과 시행착오가 많아 수차례 그만 둘 생각도 했다. 하지만 나를 믿고 기다려 준 이행돈 SM을 생각하면서 다시 한 번 마음을 잡고 적극적이고 긍정적으로 일을 했다”라며 “지금 신입 FC들도 그 때의 나처럼 거절에 대한 갈등과 고민으로 많이 방황하고 있을 것이다. 나도 그들에게 항상 힘이 되고 싶다”라고 강조했다.
‘고객의 거절’과 ‘생명에 대한 가치’를 놓고 비교한다면 감히 경중을 따질 수조차 없다. 이것이 바로 오늘의 자신을 있게 한 의미라고 밝혔다.
적극적인 소명의식으로 고객을 만난다
역경은 사람을 강하게 만든다. 역경이 없는 사람은 없다. 대통령도, 정치인도, 사업가도, 주부도, 학생도 다 나름의 역경과 고난이 있기 마련이다. 하지만 어떤 일이 있어도 목표와 꿈을 놓아서는 안 된다. 날이면 날마다 맑을 수는 없는 법, 맑은 뒤에는 구름과 비가 있고 다시 날이 개는 것은 만고불변의 법칙이다.
최병준 E.Lion도 ING생명에 입사하고 난 뒤 이러한 목표와 비전이 더욱 확고해 졌다. 그는 갑자기 가정형편이 어려워져 이 일을 시작했고, 처음부터 녹록치 않은 보험영업의 세계를 톡톡히 맛보았다. 그러던 중에 어머니까지 암 판정을 받았다고 한다. 가장 절망적인 순간, 가입해 둔 보험으로 어머니는 순조롭게 치료를 받으셨고, 이것이 그가 보험에 대해 확고한 사명감을 갖게 된 계기가 되었다.
‘그 때 보험이 없었더라면 어머니는 어떻게 되었을까’라는 생각만 하면 지금도 머릿속이 하얗게 변한다는 그다. 이때부터 최 E.Lion은 적극적인 소명의식으로 고객들을 만나기 시작했고, 자신의 경험을 들려주며 진정성으로 다가갔다. 3W를 시작해서 130주까지 연속진행이라는 기염을 토한 것도 그때부터이다. ING생명에 몸담은 지 6년차가 됐지만 그는 여전히 고공행진이다.
지난 순간의 역경이 없었더라면 오늘날 자신도 없었을 것이라 말했다. 그래서 그는 더 큰 꿈과 희망을 향해 달려가고 있다. “열정은 기적을 낳고 운명을 바꾸는 힘이 있다”는 믿음을 가진 최병준 E.Lion은 어떤 어려움 앞에서도 주저하지 않을 자신이 있었다. 왜냐하면 고객들에게 족히 만 번 이상의 거절을 당하고 시행착오를 겪으면서도 틀림없이 보험이 절실히 필요해 질 때가 있음을 알기에 그는 거절이 두렵지 않았다.
훗날 모든 것이 감사함으로 돌아올 것을 그는 경험으로 알기 때문이다.
팀의 MDRT 회원 15명이 올 해의 목표
현재 최병준 E.Lion은 ING생명의 최강그룹을 이끌고 있다. 33명의 FC들 중 대부분이 1년이 채 되지 않은 사람들이다. 자신이 그랬던 것처럼 고민과 갈등 속에 있거나 새로운 꿈에 대한 기대에 차 있을 때이다. 최 E.Lion은 그들의 진정한 멘토가 되어 올곧은 방향으로 이끌고 싶다고 밝혔다.
그는 “작년 7월부터 리크루팅을 시작해 짧은 시간 동안 많이 성장한 팀으로 입소문이 나 있다. 그만큼 긴장도 되고 설레기도 한다. FC들이 호형호제하며 잘 따라준 것이 가장 주효했다고 생각한다”라며 “현재 우리 팀에는 3명의 MDRT 회원이 있다. 나는 올해 우리 팀의 MDRT 회원을 15명으로 만들 계획이다. 또한 최강그룹 자체의 인원은 1년 후 150명을 예상하고 있다. 최고의 팀웍과 ING그룹의 프로세스, 그리고 열정과 노력이 있기에 충분히 가능하다”라고 말했다.
최병준 E.Lion은 고객의 80% 이상이 개척고객이다. 그러다 보니 팀 내에 있는 FC들도 개척고객으로 만난 사람들이 많다. 이것이 바로 인연인 듯하다.
지난 시간 실패와 좌절이 성공의 밑거름이다
바야흐로 정보가 재산인 시대다. 이는 금융에서도 마찬가지다. 노년의 삶이 더욱 길어지고 100세 시대로 도래했는데, 아무런 준비도 하지 않고 있다면 인생의 고난이 또다시 들이닥칠 것이다.
최 E.Lion은 “우리 일은 계약만으로 끝나는 것이 아니다. 고객에게 10년 혹은 20년 뒤에 있을 예기치 못한 질병이나 사고에 대비하기 위한 보장자산이나 목적자금을 위한 저축 등을 준비해 주는 일이다. 그렇기 때문에 먼 훗날을 보고 일해야 한다”라며 “ING생명에서는 자체 교육을 통해 모든 FC들을 금융전문가로 양성시킴으로써 보험뿐 아니라 꼼꼼하게 고객의 자산설계를 해준다. 그래야 고객의 제2의 삶이 편안해 질 수 있음을 알기 때문이다.
최병준 E.Lion은 자신이 오늘날의 달콤한 열매를 수확할 수 있었던 원인은 바로 힘든 경험과 좌절이 있었기 때문이라고 했다. 그는 “힘들고 아픈 것까지 즐긴다는 마음으로 한계를 뛰어넘는 순간 성공이 눈앞에 보인다”라고 했다.
감당해야 할 현실의 무게가 엄청났지만, 당당하고 행복하게 고행길에 자신을 밀어 넣은 최병준 E.Lion. 그는 정면돌파 했고, 성공을 이루고 있다. 그 길을 함께 해 준 멘토 이행돈 SM, 최상원 Royal Lion, 비전지점 지점장… 이들이 없었다면 얼마나 힘들고 쓸쓸했을까. 그는 평생 그들에게 감사할 것이라고 말했다. 또한 마지막으로 사랑하는 최강그룹 멤버들 ‘전재만, 임수근, 최석광, 김백철, 이윤미, 류인재, 배상준, 김주현, 하병석, 최재영, 김준영, 김영석, 최윤아, 김성희, 박진호, 박재형, 김정락, 엄대환, 김현식, 최병건, 장병만, 김석봉, 라태현, 허준서, 홍성호, 정혜리, 김옥철, 임성훈, 서재광, 김성훈, 김정은 비서실장’ 과 함께 “우리의 꿈과 희망을 위해 멋지게 나아갑시다!”라는 말을 전하고 싶다고 말했다.
많은 것을 이뤘지만 할 일이 더 많다는 최 E.Lion. 이렇게 중간점검을 하며 다시 한 번 초심으로 자신을 다잡고 있는 모습에서 진정한 소명의식이 느껴졌다.

A sense of mission and sincerity touch the heart of customers

There are so many phrases to refer to him, such as the first T.O.T in the twenties in Korea, the youngest branch chairman of MDRT Korea Organization, the youngest one’s achievement of Lions Club from ING, etc. Each of these moments was joy and happiness but his most favorite phrase is that he is a man of touching the heart of customers with sincerity. If he had done sales with the head, not with the heart, he would have had as many worries as the time of refusals he received. Through the refusals over ten thousand good times, however, he found that there are many lives he was able to save. Because of the mission toward them, Choi Byoung-jun, a young executive lion of ING Life, is simply enjoying refusals today with a happy mind.
Should put the value of life before the refusal from a customer
Choi Byoung-jun of ING Life, who is creating a new history in domestic life insurance industry, joined the company in 2009 at the age of 25 as the youngest FC. Then, he started piling up results of performance one after another to disturb the whole insurance industry. Especially, ‘100% maintenance’ is the record his is most proud of, which cannot be achieved solely by good sales. It is only possible when the three things - product quality, customer satisfaction and sales person’s continued management ? are combined together. Probably it was made possible because his heart of doing his best even with a single customer was felt by the customer. Looking back on the early days of joining, E, Lion Choi said, “Even after joining ING Life by the connection with SM Lee Haeng-don, I made no performance at all for six months. This caused more worries coupled with trials and errors putting me thinking about quitting several times. However, the presence of SM Lee Hange-don, who had been waiting with confidence in me, made me work myself up to engage affirmatively and positively in my duty.” He then emphasized, “The new FC’s now must be wandering around with conflict and worry over refusals they receive just like me then. I, too, want to help them make a big difference all the time.” The ‘customer’s refusal’ cannot even be compared with the ‘value of life’ from the beginning. This fact has made him what he is, he clarified.
Meets a customer with positive sense of mission
Adversity makes a person strong. No one can escape from adversity. The president, politician, businessman, housewife, student, and all will have his own adversity and hardship. However, you should not let go of your aim and dream under any circumstances. Every day cannot be a sunny weather. It is the law of permanence that a sunny day is followed by a cloudy and rainy days, and then it clears back up. E. Lion Choi Byoung-jun also became even firmer in such an aim and vision after joining ING Life. He started this job because his family suddenly became poor and had a bitter experience in the world of selling insurance from the start. According to him, in the meantime, his mother also received the decision of cancer to make matters worse. At the most desperate moment, his mother was able to receive treatment smoothly from the insurance he had subscribed to, which made him an opportunity to have a firm sense of mission in insurance.
He says that just thinking ‘what would have become of his mother then without insurance?’ makes his mind go blank even now. E. Lion Choi started to meet customers with a positive sense of mission, coming up to them with sincerity. It was from then that he started 3W and set the brilliant record of going on for 130 successive weeks. Now his is on his 6th year in service since he joined ING Life, he is still on the fast track. He said that without the past moments of adversity, he wouldn’t be made what he is, either. So he is running toward a bigger dream and hope. Believing that “Passion begets a miracle and has the power of changing one’s destiny,” E. Lion Choi felt sure that he wouldn’t hesitate before any kind of difficulty. Since he knew that there would be a time later when they are in desperate need for insurance, he was not afraid of their refusal even though he had received over ten thousand times of refusal from customers. He has already been aware from experience that everything will return with gratitude.
This year’s team goal for 15 MDRT members
Currently, E. Lion Choi Byoung-jun is heading the strongest group in ING Life. Of 33 FC’s, most are persons less than one year in service to the company. It is the time when they must be in worries and conflicts, or filled with expectations for a new dream, just like he was there. E. Lion Choi clarified that he wanted to lead them along in the right direction as their true mentor. He said, “I started recruiting in July last year and this team is well reputed for a significant growth in a short period, which makes me both nervous and excited. I think it worked most that the FC’s have followed me well in close friendship. Currently, our team has three MDRT members in it but I am planning to make it 15 of MDRT members for this year. Besides, for the personnel in the strongest group itself, I am expecting to make it 150 persons one year later. It is a possible goal because we have the best teamwork, process of ING Group, passion and efforts.” For E. Lion Choi, over 80% of customers are those of his own creating. Likewise, there are many of FC’s in this team who he met as a created customer, which may mean karma, exactly.
Failure and frustration in your past time is the foundation for success.
This is the age in which information you have acquired means your property. The same goes for finance. In this centenarian age with a longer life for the elderly, lacking preparations may mean another hardship coming to you. E. Lion Choi says, “Our engagement doesn’t end simply by signing an agreement. We should work looking far into the future because our job is to prepare customers with guaranteed asset against unexpected a disease or accident ten or twenty years later or with savings for purposeful fund, ING Life nurtures all FC’s into financial specialists through the company education not only for insurance but also for assent design on behalf of the customer, knowing that is the way to make the customer’s second life comfortable. E. Lion Choi said that it is the hard experience and frustration that has enabled him to harvest today’s sweet fruit. “He said, “The moment you surmount the limitations with a mind to enjoy even difficulty and pain, you can see success right before your eyes.”
