Korea¡¯s First Female ODA Expert Pioneers Agrifood Science 

Kim Geon-hee, Professor of Food and Nutrition of Duksung Women¡¯s University, Former President of Korea Food Hygiene & Safety Academy 


Foods are well known to serve as a significant source of providing necessary nutrition to our body. At the same time, however, it can pose a serious danger as it directly enters into, thereby impacting human body. For this reason, academia has long conducted studies on the effects of food on human body. In addition, it has taken a leading role in providing more specialized and accurate information through various academic activities. 

With the female-peculiar sensitivity and a strong drive, Kim Geon-hee has led Korea Food Hygiene & Safety Academy. She has posed a question on food that has a possibility of turning into a food safety accident. She also made her efforts to rectify wrong-directed policies and public opinion. Meanwhile, she is renowned for her abilities to systemize hygienic and safe food production within the food industry, and playing a key role in coming up with food hygiene and safety policy for the nation.     

Afterwards, the academy has provided accurate information in a timely manner with more objective perspective, and contributed to establishing the academic ground and setting up food safety policy, standing as Korea¡¯s representative academy. 

It has held regular academic symposiums on the safety of agricultural, marine and livestock product, food additives and health functional food. At this place, many prominent domestic and overseas scholars were invited to lead discussions on interesting issues of the times. 


Female Food Scientist Makes Remarkable Achievement 

After serving as a president of Korea Food Hygiene & Safety Academy, she has actively involved in studies on food and nutrition and teaching students at Duksung Women¡¯s University. She herself has long worked as an ODA expert in agrifood science, becoming a role model of many females. Majored in food and nutrition science at university, she earned her doctorate in food science at The University of New South Wales, Australia. Since 1993, she has taught at the department of food and nutrition at Duksung Women¡¯s University. 

By offering around 300 papers to domestic and overseas renowned academic papers and presenting about 250 papers at international symposiums, she is considered as the best expert in the field of fruit and vegetable technology. After consistently involving in researches, she has acquired patents in ¡®functional beverage made with garlic extract¡¯,¡®method to store mushroom¡¯,¡®functional flour and functional food made with it¡¯ and etcetera. As of now, she has applied 23 domestic and 4 international patents. 

Thanks to her great contributions, she has received many awards in the field. She also published several books and one of it named Food Chemistry was designated as the best academic book by Ministry of Education in 2012. 

She has worked as an ODA (Official Development Assistance) expert for Asean countries since 1991 when Korea has not begun to give aid to overseas countries. Since 2002, she has involved in consulting on  management, hygiene and safety of agrifood in the 10 Asean countries such as Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia. 

She says she desires to devote herself to improving the health of global citizens as her own right. Duksung Women¡¯s University and Cambodia Royal Agricultural College made a partnership. Currently, she is in charge of Nutrition Improvement and Welfare Enhancement Project in Cambodia¡¯s Agricultural Community.  

She also wants to nurture Cambodian and Myanmar students and see them to contribute to enhancing their national growth.

In addition, she served as various important positions within the government. She has also conducted a joint research with HRI(Horticultural Research International), USDA(Belsville, MD) and Hokkaido National Agricultural Experiment Station as an ¡®invited scientist¡¯. She was a visiting professor at Hokkaido University. 

She said she would try her best hard to contribute to improving citizen¡¯s health and conducting studies on science and technology in the fast-changing dietary environment.
