Promote ¡®Elly¡¯s Chocolate¡¯ at The World¡¯s Biggest

Chocolate Festival, Salon Du Chocolat

Kim Seon-hee, CEO, Elly¡¯s Chocolate

Salon Du Chocolat starting in France has been annually held in 20 cities in 11 countries for the past 20 years. With attracting 3.6 million visitors from 4 continents, it is by far the biggest chocolate festival, and known for high quality chocolate festival for those who are in chocolate industry such as patissier, ice cream maker, producer, chocolate-producing countries, cocoa producer, trainer and books.

Various events of the festival have become international culture contents. At 2014 Seoul Salon Du Chocolat held from Jan 16 to 19 at COEX, Kim Seon-hee, CEO of Elly¡¯s Chocolate, displayed chocolate art made of costumes of Eoh Wudong (Korea¡¯s famous entertainer in Choseon Dynasty) and Madonna, Swan Lake, and a variety of accessories. To her, chocolate is no longer a kind of snack. Rather, it can become a great material to make a piece of art. Like a magician, she turned a chocolate desert into a hand-painted work. PowerKorea interviewed CEO Kim to focus on her works and career.

The festival has its significance of enhancing the status of chocolate, which has been undermined, as well as contributing to boosting the chocolate industry by participating in the event. Chocolate served as a good opportunity of bringing visitors and buyers from across the globe together. Various contents and events promoted visitors¡¯ participation, and helped visitors to see remarkable works. Especially, the fashion show held every 5 p.m. during the festival drew the hottest response from the visitors. Participating 12 teams displayed costumes and accessories made with chocolate. Among them, the costumes of Eoh Wudong and Madonna made by Kim drew enthusiastic attention from both visitors and industry officials. Her works garnered fervent response from audiences during the show as the chocolate art was expressed with unimaginably eloquent technique. Her chocolate art has a significance of recreating culture that we can not only eat but also wear, see and enjoy the chocolate.

Chocolatier which started in France was known as a chocolate maker or seller. As the awareness on chocolate as a kind of culture among chocolate powerhouse has expanded, it¡¯s significance has begun to change as a piece of art. Unfortunately, there is a lack of awareness on chocolatier in Korea. However, chocolatiers have made good progress around the world. As Korea¡¯s Kim garnered the most fervent response at the fashion show that many international chocolatiers participated, this event is leaving us more to think about.

This event showed us that we have a great potential stand out as a chocolate powerhouse as we have many good chocolatiers who have sincerely worked like Kim herself. Thanks to them, chocolate can work as culture. That is why we need to call them master craftsmen.

In terms of how she treats chocolate, she said that she thinks chocolate is passion and sincerity that bring art, culture and fashion together. With this in mind, she could recreate the value of chocolate. She desired to promote true beauty of chocolate by expressing art with chocolate. Worlds¡¯ renowned chocolatiers have participated in Salon Du Chocolate which started in 1995 in France, the original country of chocolate for royal family. So, she decided to participate in the festival in order to enhance the Korea¡¯s status as a Korea¡¯s representative chocolatier. As she had participated in overseas chocolate exhibitions, she got suggestions from overseas buyers to open a chocolate shop in France. However, she turned it down because she wanted to devote herself to contributing to enhancing chocolate culture in Korea. Fortunately, her effort got rewards. Her works drew huge attention from audience at the show. It is no exaggeration to say that she would become a Korea¡¯s leading chocolatier. To be given a question that why she wanted to become a chocolatier, she said that she could not help being attracted to chocolate which her father bought for her. She expressed her ambition of making more progress in 2014.
