대표의 수학 기본서 <수학평정> 시리즈가 책으로 나왔다.A 각각 15, 18일만에 끝내는 고등수학 기본서 상,하. 22일만에 끝내는 수학Ⅰ의 열기가 채 식기도 전에 23일만에 끝내는 수학II, 미적분과 통계기본의 기본서 두 권이 신년벽두를 뜨겁게 달구고 있는 것이다. 이로써 총 7권의 수학평정 시리즈가 한 매듭을 지었다. 그리고 다시 시작이다.     

8년의 산고 끝에 선보이는 수학 정복 가이드

경기도 안양시 평촌 학원가에 위치한 수학평정학원(대표 곽병학)은 차별화된 수학 교재와 탁월한 강의를 기반으로 내신수학과 수리영역을 완전 정복하는데 주력하면서 쟁쟁한 학원이 즐비한 평촌 학원가에서도 유명세를 떨치고 있다. 뉴질랜드에서 5년간 수학교육을 실시했던 경험을 살려 영어 원서로도 수학을 강의하는 것도 유명하다. 

나아가 곽병학 대표는 수학평정연구소를 통해 교재 집필에도 주력하면서 더욱 탄탄한 수학전문학원으로 거듭나고 있다. 기존 수학교재로는 현재의 수능과 내신 출제 경향을 커버하기 어렵다는 것을 인지하고, 8년 노력 끝에 한국 학습풍토에 맞는 최적의 수학 기본서를 펴내는 데 성공한 것이다. 원고 집필 기간 5년 반, 검토 작업에만 1년 반이 넘게 걸렸다.

“23년째 교육 현장에서 직접 가르치면서 학생들의 고민사항을 고려했습니다. 어려운 문제 풀이에 쉽게 접근할 수 있는 비법이 무엇일까를 고민했죠. 제 아무리 변화무쌍하고 신출귀몰한 고교 수학이라고 하더라도 개념에 쉽게 접근하는 방법을 알고 유형별로 잘 정리만 한다면 정복이 가능합니다. 예를 들어 ‘행렬, 극한, 확률, 통계의 명제 편에서 참 거짓 찾기’ ‘상용 로그의 실생활 문제 체계화’처럼 학생들이 가장 혼란스러워 하는 부분에서도 정확히 맥을 짚었다고 자부합니다.” 

내신+수능 정복을 한번에 끝내는 알짜 기본서

기본적으로 <수학평정>은 개념, 수준, 유형별로 구성되었다. 개념별(Concept)로 만들어야 그 단원의 개념을 전문적으로 익히며, 수준별(Level)로 만들어야 가장 어려운 수학을 가장 쉽게 접근하며, 유형별(Type)로 만들어야 출제경향을 확실하게 파악할 수 있을 거라는 믿음에서다. 이는 현장에서의 오랜 경험을 바탕으로 체득한 확신이다. 

이 시리즈는 내신출제의 유형, 수능, 모의고사 문제, 1등급 심화까지 한번에 완전 정복하는 고득점 수학 기본서를 표방하고 있다. 수능과 내신에서 높은 등급을 얻을 수 있는 개념과 문제를 최적화한 것이다. 또한 기존의 수학 기본서는 그 대상이 모호하지만 이 책은 정확히 1~4등급 학생들에게 초점을 맞추고 있다. 기본 개념 습득과 함께 다양한 유형에 대한 적응 학습과 훈련을 유도하여 자기 주도적인 선행 및 심화학습이 가능하도록 구성된 것도 장점이다. 

각 단원 말미에 핵심 개념을 다시 정리해 놓았고, 일일 학습 분량을 표시했으며, 집중도를 높이면서 문제를 풀 수 있도록 여백을 두는 편집 방식을 채택한 것도 특징이다. 그리고 는 실전에 50% 이상, 는 90% 이상 출제된 문제를 표시하는 ‘알짜 중의 알짜 표시’도 학생들에게 큰 인기다. 

한국적인 내신, 수능에 최적화된 새 틀을 짜기 위해

곽 대표가 교재를 만들게 된 계기는 과거 학창시절의 경험 때문이다. 수학기본서나 문제집이 손에 꼽을 정도였던 고등학교 시절. 1966년에 일본 책을 번역한 수학기본서가 유일무이한 바이블이었다. 같은 책을 몇 번이고 반복해서 풀 수밖에 없었으며, 당연히 다양한 문제를 접할 기회가 없었다. 모의고사와 대학입시와도 다른 경향을 가지고 있었다.

“70년대 본고사, 80년대 학력고사, 90년대 수능시대로 바뀌면서 출제경향도 많이 변화했죠. 수십 년 동안 재탕만 하는 기본서로는 수능과 내신 출제 경향을 커버하기가 어려운 실정입니다. 이제는 수학 기본서도 한국의 학습 풍토에 맞게 변화해야 하는 시대인 것입니다.”

학생들에게 맞는 한국적인 내신, 수능에 최적화된 수학 기본서의 판을 다시 짜고 싶다는 것이 그의 작지만 큰 꿈이었다. 조금씩 성과를 이루고 있는 중이다. 또한 “총 17권의 교재를 출간, 출판사업, 학원 프랜차이즈 사업을 병행할 것”이라는 새로운 꿈을 꾸고 있다. 

그의 꿈이 이루어진다면, 대학 입시에서 수학의 비중이 점점 커지고 있는 이 때에, 수능과 내신에 실질적인 도움을 주는 수학바이블 <수학평정>은 계속해서 뜨거운 호응을 얻을 것이다. 

추가적으로 곽 대표는 비즈니스와 관련된 구상도 이미 마친 상태다. 17권의 시리즈가 국내 학생들 대상이라면 해외 나가 있는 많은 유학생 대상으로 영문판으로도 출판 할 계획을 가지고 있으며 중국은 중국버전으로, 일본은 일본버전으로도 수학평정시리즈를 출판하여 글로벌 코리아를 계획하고 있다. 평생 나의 lifework으로 삶고 살고 싶다. 내년에는 강남 대치동 분원을 시작으로 프랜차이즈 사업도 병행할 예정이다. 수학 평정학원 사업은 수학원서를 가르쳐주는 Math class spoken in English를 이끌 계획이다. 앞으로는 영어면 영어, 수학이면 수학이 아니라 한국의 교육도 Hybride Education을 해야 하고  Multi-player로서의 인재를 만들어 내야 한다고 생각하고 있다. 

The CEO Gwak Byoung-hak is writing education columns in Naeil newspaper, Sports Seoul, CEO News, and THE DONG- A ILBO. His book of math basics, Math Master Series is published. High school basics of upper and lower which can be mastered in 15 days and 18 days respectively. The book MasterⅠ which can be mastered in 22 days, whose heat continues to two books of Math Ⅱ, differential and integral calculus and elementary statistics is heating up the beginning of 2012. With this, Math Master series of seven books in total has been settled. And now start all over again.

Math Master Institute (representative Gwak Byoung-hak) located in Pyeongchon institutes street in An-yang city of Gyeonggi province has been getting famous in this street full of outstanding institutes, concentrating its energy on completely mastering math of previous school records and the realm of mathematics. The Math Master is basically composed of concepts, level, and types. The experience of his past school days is the reason why the representative Gwak started to write books. In his high school days, when basic math books and workbooks for students are very rare, and the basic math book translated from Japanese one in 1966 was unique Bible. We had to solve the problems repeatedly of the same book as we did, and we, of course, had no chance to get at the various problems. The mock test had different trends from the ones of college entrance exam.

"The trends of exam have changed a lot, changing from the bongosa type testing, a test which would include other subjects such as English or mathematics in the 1970s, a achievement test in the 1980s, to college scholastic ability test in the 1990s. It is very difficult for us to cover the examination question trends of college scholastic ability test and school grades with the basic book that is only a remake of its first one for decades. This is the time in which basic math book too has to be changed to Korean learning climate."

He wanted to remake a framework of basic math books appropriate for school grades of Korean students, optimized for college scholastic ability test is little dream. His dream is paying off little by little. His new dream is that "he is going to manage both the publishing business and academy franchise business by publishing 17 books in total." 

When his dream comes true, this is the time when math is on the increase in the college entrance exam, math Bible <Math Master> that is offering practical assistance with college scholastic ability test and school grades will keep on getting an enthusiastic welcome. 

In addition, the representative Gwak finished conceiving business. He has a plan of global Korea that the series of 17 books for students in Korea, which as a series of math master will be published in English for many students overseas, and in Chinese version, Japanese version. I would like live, making it my lifework. Next year I am going to combine a publishing work with a franchise business, starting branch office in Daechidong of Gangnam area. The business of math master institute is going to lead math class spoken in English, in which we teach it in English. I think that from this forward we should seek Hybrid Education, not conscribe to only English and math, and create better and stronger resources as multi-players.
