2011년 대한민국 산업포장 수훈. 2010년 대통령표창 수상. 2011년 고용노동부장관표창 등 산업발전부문 및 최우수훈련기관으로서 총 11회 수상. 2010년 직업능력개발원 실업자훈련기관 평가에서 전국 808개 기관 중 전국 1위 최우수훈련기관으로 선정. 한국산업인력공단 평가에서 2003~2011년 9년 연속 전국우수훈련기관(A등급) 선정. 총 23번의 A등급 달성. 2008년, 2011년에는 교육생만족도 부문에서 각각 전국 1위와 전국 2위. 결코 가벼운 성과가 아니다. 이 정도면 직업전문학교로서 받을 수 있는 거의 모든 상, 영광을 누렸다고 봐도 무방하다. 

전라북도 군산과 익산에 캠퍼스를 둔 성심직업전문학교(www.sungsimit.or.kr 교장 박석재)가 그 주인공이다. 

해를 거듭할수록 강해지는 직업훈련의 메카

1989년 성심경리컴퓨터학원으로 설립하여 전문계 고등학교 기능 인력을 양성한 것이 그 시작이었다. 2002년 성심직업전문학교로서 고용노동부 시설지정을 받았고 그 이듬해부터 지금까지 고속성장을 멈추지 않았고 최고의 자리에 올랐다. 하지만 박석재 교장은 아직도 갈 길이 멀다고 말한다. 1983년부터 국제경리학원에서 강의를 시작했으니 박석재 교장의 교육경력은 30년에 달한다. 명 강의로 이름을 날렸던 명성처럼 그간의 성과와 교육철학을 아낌없이 쏟아냈다. 

취업률이 매우 높은 것으로 알려져 있다. 비결이 있다면? 

▶ 관내 중소기업체와 산학협동 협약체결을 통해 훈련생 취업률이 양 캠퍼스 모두 평균 80%가 넘는다. 매년 100여 개가 넘는 기업체와 산학협동협정서를 체결하고 있다. 또한 실력 있는 강사진을 구축하고 맞춤식 강의를 통해 목표에 접근한다. 최신 교육시설 장비구축은 기본이다. 자체 훈련시설을 위해 두 학교에 30억 원을 투자했다. 동영상 강좌를 통해 집에서도 복습과 예습할 수 있도록 동영상 콘텐츠 시스템도 구축했다. 모든 것이 기본이다. 기본기에 충실하면 자연스럽게 자격증 취득과 높은 취업률로 이어진다.

강사진도 유명세를 타고 있다.  

▶ 우리는 교사들도 공부한다. 연간 64시간 이상 신기술연수를 통해 실력을 향상시키고 있으며, 취업률과 수료율 등의 목표 달성 시 인센티브를 지급한다. 질 낮은 교사 밑에서 좋은 학생이 나올 수 없다. 그 결과 학생들의 중도 탈락은 10%가 채 되지 않는다.

어떤 훈련과정이 있나?

▶ 정보통신설비, 정보통신시스템, 유비쿼터스, 네트워크운용의 통신 전반에 대한 기술 및 응용에 관한 훈련과정과 내장형하드웨어, 메카트로닉의 전자분야에 대한 기술과 응용에 관한 훈련과정을 비롯하여 기계부품 설계, 일반기업체 경리실무의 요건인 전산세무회계과정으로 나누어지고 있다.

국가기간전략산업, 신성장동력산업훈련, 직업능력개발계좌제 훈련 등으로도 다시 세분화된다. 

학생과 학교가 함께 성장해야 의미가 있어

박석재 교장은 학생들과의 유대감을 유난히 강조했다. 학생의 미래가 곧 나라의 미래, 학생을 잘 보살피는 것이 애국이라는 생각에서다. 생활이 어려운 훈련생에게는 생계비를 지원하기도 하고 경조사까지 두루 챙긴다. 가정의 달이나 연말연시에는 모두에게 고기를 선물하기도 한다. 교직원들과도 크게 다르지 않다. 평생을 같이 한다는 가족경영을 펼쳐 대부분 장기근속을 하고 있다. 

교육철학이 궁금하다. 

▶ 직업훈련의 체계성을 확립하고 열린 교육을 통해 첨단산업사회에 대비한 기능인을 육성하고자 한다. 지식정보화 사회의 급변하는 새로운 패러다임과 기업의 신기술을 이용한 산업 생산구조의 변화와 요구를 만족시킬 수 있는 인력. 창의적이고 다양한 분야에 경쟁력을 갖춘 창조적인 인력을 배출하는 것이 목표다. 국가 사회 발전에 기여할 인간 교육, 정보화 사회를 선도할 인재 육성, 고용증진 및 생산성 향상에 필요한 전문지식인 교육을 철학으로 삼고 있다. 1시간의 강의는 작품이어야 하며 교육생에게는 감동이어야 한다는 것이 내 지론이다. 그 안에 우리의 미래가 있다. 학생들에게 미래를 제시하지 못하는 교육자는 존재의 의미가 없다.

공동 학습목표 달성이 무엇인가?  

▶ 훈련생들 간의 협동학습을 유도하기 위해 창안한 것이다. 교사의 의견과 훈련생 개인별 특성(입학평가시험, 초기학습평가, 기본타자실력, 관련자격증, 시력 등)을 참고하여 협동학습 자리배치를 실시하는 식이다. 전국직업전문학교 기관장 회의에서 우수 사례로 발표하기도 했다. 또한 훈련생에 대한 심적 상황을 파악한다면 관리에 도움이 될 것 같다는 생각에 매월 체험수기를 작성하게 한다. 이 역시 한국산업인력공단 과정개발 콘테스트에서 우수 사례로 발표한 바 있다.  

성심직업전문학교는 두드릴수록 단단해지는 쇠처럼 해를 거듭하며 더욱 알찬 학교로 거듭나고 있다. 하지만 박석재 교장은 아직도 갈 길이 멀다며 담금질을 멈추지 않는다. 전문 기능인 양성을 위한 전문기능대학 설립이라는 목표가 있기 때문이다.

The Mecca of Vocational Training, Ever-Bettering

SungSim started in 1989 as a computerized accounting school, and was approved in 2002 by the Ministry of Employment And Labor as a vocational training institute.

Starting in 1983 as an instructor at International Accountancy Academy, his teaching career lasted almost 30 years.

Just as he gives the famous lectures in class, so he speaks without reservation about his

achievements and educational philosophy.

SungSim is well-known for its high percentage of employment. What are the secrets? 

▶ Every year, we pass “Industrial-Educational Cooperation” protocols with more than 100 local businesses.

We also have able instructors and encourage them to give student-oriented lectures. In addition, we have invested 3 billion won in providing our 2 campuses with up-to-date training equipment and facilities of their own. Our students can review and preview through on-line lectures.

All you have to do is go back to the basics. If you stick to the principle, everything will lead to a high percentage of obtaining certificates and finding jobs. 

Your instructors are also becoming famous.  

▶ Our instructors are studying hard too! 

They improve their teaching skills by participating in study and training sessions for new technology more than 64 hours a year. If they attain their target rates of course completion and employment, they will receive incentives. As a result of this, the percentage of dropouts stays less than 10%.

What is your educational philosophy? 

▶ I would like to establish systematic vocational training courses, and foster engineers and technicians who can deal with high-tech industrial society. Our goal is to produce the brains creative and competitive in various fields. To sum up, my “educational philosophy” is to produce the brains leading the Information Society, and foster professionals who can stimulate employment and boost productivity.  

Principal Park places a strong emphasis on the feeling of solidarity with students. He believes that students are the future of our country, so taking good care of them is serving the country. That is why he offers personal supports to students of poor families, and pays attention even to their family events. He also treats his school personnel like family members, which helps them work there for a long time. 

What is the “Achievement of Learning Goals by Joint Study”? 

▶ I invented the program to promote joint study by students. For example, we assign seats in the classroom according to teachers’ opinions and qualities of individual students. The program was once presented as a model case at the meeting of the heads of vocational training institutes nationwide.

I also instruct students to write a monthly note about their actual learning experience, believing it will help to better understand students’ psychological conditions. This was also presented as a model case at a contest for course development held by Human Resources Development Service of Korea.  

SungSim Vocational School is becoming better and better over years, just as the more the iron is struck, the harder it gets. But Mr. Park never stops, saying he still has a long way to go. His final goal is still out there: founding a technical college to foster professional artisans.
