선박배관 전문기업 GMP산업 옥영기 대표

한국조선업은 1970년대 초반부터 비약적인 발전을 거듭했다. 뛰어난 기술과 다른 나라에서는 시도할 엄두조차 내지 못하는 창의적 도전, 어떤 수를 써서라도 약속한 납기일은 지키는 프로 정신 등이 그 배경이었다. 이 축소판이 바로 GMP산업이다. 거대한 선박에는 수없이 많은 자재와 세심한 손길이 필요하다. 나사 하나라도 잘못 조이면 대형사고로 이어지는 것이 바로 선박이다. 선박을 인체에 비유하자면 혈관은 선박의 배관이다. 단 한 곳이라도, 아무리 작더라도 동맥경화가 시작되면 심장은 터지고 만다. 하지만 GMP산업이 있다면 얘기는 달라진다. 

선박 업계　최고의 업체로 자리매김

경남 거제시에 위치한 GMP산업은 (주)대우조선해양의 주협력업체로서 선박의 비철배관 분야에 관련된 사업에 주력하고 있다. 플라스틱 및 스테인레스 계열의 배관재를 사용하여 선박의 데크 하우스(Deck House) 내에 설치된 상하수도관용 스풀 피스(Spool Piece)를 전문적으로 제작·설치하는 업체다. 1999년 창업한 이후 회사명처럼 명품을 만드는 GMP산업이 되고자 노력했다. 납품만 하고 끝내는 것이 아니라 후행작업에 더 철저하게 임했다. 룰과 레귤레이션(Rule & Regulation), 빌딩 스펙(Building Spec), 설계, 제작, 설치, 검사, A/S 등 선박에 관한 총체적인 업무를 수행할 수 있는 능력을 토대로 대우 등의 대기업과 동반성장을 지속하고 있다. 국내 최고의 기술력과 장비, 합리적인 가격 등이 경쟁력을 갖춰 야드(yard)는 물론이고 선주, 선급에 이르기까지 신뢰받는 기업으로 손꼽힌다. 

가난한 섬 소년, 선박왕을 꿈꾸다

거제도가 고향인 옥 대표는 찢어지게 가난한 어린 시절을 보냈다. 중학교를 졸업하면서 다시는 돌아오지 않겠다는 생각으로 고향을 떠났다. 부산에서 조선업과 인연을 맺었다. 그러다 우연처럼 친구 결혼식에 왔다가 대우조선으로 스카웃된다. 능력은 이미 소문이 났던 터였다. 그렇게 선박설계팀에서 일을 시작했다. 특유의 성격 탓에 게으를 수가 없었다. 

1999년 창업에 뛰어들었지만 자본이 없었다. 직원은 그를 포함해 세 명. 친구의 축사를 빌려 겨우 비가림만 한 채 사업을 시작했다. 이를 악물고 10년 안에 회사를 100배 키우겠다고 결심했다. 선박 관련 최고가 되겠다고 결심하면서 부지런히 뛰어다녔다. 그 결과는 성공으로 되돌아왔다.  

축사에서 시작한 사업. 지난 해 9월에는 대규모 자가 공장을 완공하면서 제2의 창업을 선포했다. 이를 기반으로 조선소는 물론이고 Ship Owner, Class 등의 고객만족을 위해 힘쓰겠다는 계획이다. 당시 옥 대표가 내세운 모토는 창조적 혁신, 창조적 생각, 창조적 전환이다. 무엇보다 창조를 강조한다. 선박 산업에서 빠질 수 없는 부분이다. 

세계적 경쟁력 확보에 노력할 터

옥 대표는 선박의 특성상 해수에 대한 부식방지 및 유지보수를 위해서는 기존의 금속배관류는 더 이상 경쟁력을 유지할 수가 없다고 전망했다. 가볍고, 녹슬지 않고 작업성(가공 및 조립)이 편리할 뿐만 아니라 원자재의 가격 및 자재수급성도 원활한 프라스틱 계통 혹은 스테인레스 계통의 배관재가 향후 선박 배관자재의 주류가 될 것으로 판단하고 있다. 

“설계, 제작, 설치, 검사에 이르기까지 총체적인 관리와 공급할 수 있는 시스템을 갖추고 있으므로 비철배관분야 영역에서 독보적인 회사로 자리매김 할 계획입니다.” 

현재 그의 목표는 2015년 350억 원 매출 달성이다. 결코 부푼 꿈이 아니다. 회사의 규모에 걸맞는 매출이라고 판단해서다. 창업 당시 목표가 “회사를 100배로 키우자”였는데 외형상 그 모습이 갖춰지고 있다는 판단에서다. 

“그 동안 쌓은 금쪽같은 노하우와 시장의 변화에 탄력적으로 대응할 수 있는 기술개발을 통해 세계적인 경쟁력을 확보함과 동시에 선주나 선급 검사관들로부터 선박 비철배관 분야에서 명품을 만드는 회사로 인증받겠다”고 포부를 밝혔다. 

독실한 기독교인인 옥 대표는 지구촌 가난한 아이들에게 작은 교회를 지어주고 교육의 기회를 제공하고 싶다는 말년의 꿈을 가지고 있다. 전문 찬양팀을 만들어 부인과 함께 교회를 순방한다는 계획도 가지고 있다. 아마 자신의 땀이 고스란히 배인 선박을 타고 그 꿈을 이루러 대양을 누비게 될 날을 기다려 본다.

Huge vessels need a tremendous number of parts and an elaborate care. In case only one small piece of screws is wrongly tightened, that may result in tragic accidents. If comparing vessels to human body, blood vessel can be referred to as vessel pipes. If pipes in a vessel have some problem, the ship could face an irretrievable accidence, as if small harden artery occurs, a rupture happens. Nevertheless, the problem is solved as long as with GMP.

GMP Industry, a partner of the (Corp) Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marin Engineering located in Geoje City belonged to Sough Gyeongsang Province, concentrates their efforts on non-ferrous piping. By using plastic and stainless-made plumbing materials, the company produces and install spool piece used for water pipes that installs in vessel’s deck house. 

Since the establishment in 1999, the company has put the best effort to be one that manufactures the best quality of products. The company not only did the delivery on time but also executed after service. A Poor Boy Born in a Small Island, Dreaming Becoming a Shipbuilding Champion

The CEP Ok, born in Geoje Island, was a boy in an extremely poor family. As graduating from middle school, he left the island and determined he would never come back to the home island. Meanwhile, he started shipbuilding work that resulted in being scouted by Daewoo Shipbuilding when attending a wedding of his friend. At the time his reputation was already all around. That was how he started work at the design team of Daewoo Shipbuilding. Being lazy was unacceptable to him because of his sunny diligent characteristic.       

In 1999, although he started his own business, he suffered from monetary shortage. 3 men including Ok were all the workers and they borrowed one cattle shed from his friend to use as an office. He, however, deeply determined he would grow his company 100 times bigger in 10 years. He worked harder than bee as dreaming to be the best in the industry. As a result of it, the thorny way turned into diamond path.   

As growing the company in the cattle shed, he successfully built his own factory and announced second establishment. As doing so, he is attempting to make customers including ship owner & class feel satisfied. The CEO Ok’s business philosophy is creative innovation, creative thought, and creative transition. These are the key points in shipbuilding industry.

Trying to Secure the World Wide Competitive Power

The CEP Ok anticipates that metal-material-made-pipes cannot keep competitive power because of its erosion occurring when facing salt water. He also expects plastic or stainless-material-made-pipes will be widely used because it is slight, not rusted, easy to work with, cheap, and easy to find. 

“Starting with design, manufacture, installation, and ending with inspection, we possess overall system to administrate and supply. Thus we will be the best in non-ferrous piping industry,” said by the CEO Ok.  

Now his goal is to achieve 350 million won until 2015. This is not a fanciful dream because currently his company generates a huge amount of revenue. When establishing, his goal was “Growing up 100 times bigger,” and it gets closer. He also addressed his aspiration as stating, “We will secure the world wide competitive power through developing technology that is our precious know-how used to flexibly deal with the market change that will result in making ship owners or inspectors know who we are.” 

The CEO Ok, a devout Christian, hopes to let poor children in struggling countries have an education chance and know the God’s existence as building small churches. He also plans to make a Christian chanter and visit the countries with his wife that he wants to accomplish in his later years. I will be looking forward to seeing him going there on a perfect ship that he put the best efforts to make.
